He usually avoided reaps in New York nowadays. But he'd been the last to claim his reaps this round of orders, so here he was.
He could hear angry shouts coming from inside the apartment, sort of shabby and run down. There wasn't much to comment about here except for the... well the lack of much, really. He was by the fire escape, peering into the room where a woman and a teenager - Owen figured he looked a little older than he did - were spouting loud words at each other. He could gleam the general gist of the conversation - a boy falling into bad company, a mother's violent concern. Owen seemed to care little. As if he of all people would know what a normal family life should have looked like.
The sliding window to their lounge room remained carelessly unlocked. Owen nonchalantly pushed the glass open and stepped inside. The room smelled old, dusty, perhaps. He already knew which one he had to reap - his thread was the lovely colour of blood now. The clock was ticking down slowly as the argument ensued, neither party giving up their case. Owen stood quietly in the corner of the room, going entirely unnoticed.
It wasn't hard to predict what came next. A gun was drawn, a struggle ensued, accidental fire. It was all silent after the loud bang, to the apprentice it felt like the gunshot had made him deaf.
He grabbed the thread from a distance as the teenager fell to the floor, mother too shocked to speak. Owen's pen ripped the threads apart, and as he let the frayed ends go, he stepped out the front door, unnoticed as well.
Outside, there was no evidence that anything had just happened. As if gunshots were a regular occurrence here, no one stopped to look. Or perhaps mistaken for another sound around here.
Perhaps death was closer to this small block than others.
~~~~
The park provided some form of peace. The police had arrived by the block across the road, although he could care less for the sirens and flashing lights. At least the dead man inside would get some form of justice, the truth would be found. Even in death he already had more than Owen ever would, and he couldn't help but feel jealous. Dying was not pleasant, he would admit, but there were plenty of other things that were worse.
This worn out bench was a decent spot to sit and watch the people go by. The birds and general chatter barely managed to push the sirens to the back of the soundscape, but if Owen focused enough he wouldn't hear a thing.
A sparrow had landed on his palms, which had a bit of birdseed in them. Perhaps this little one would take him back to HQ today.
Spring had finally come to New York, and Lang clung to the vague warmth as best as he could. Clement didn't have anything for him to do today, so he decided to go out and explore his new home, possibly try to find more warmth.
His aimless wandering eventually led him to a park, sunlight spilling over the trees. It still amazed him, how he could go from those tall glass buildings to this in a matter of minutes. With the birds and the greenery, it's like the outside world never existed, and Lang felt at peace here. Well, there were still cars and sirens in the distance, but those were easy to ignore.
As he walked along, he spotted a park bench, and on it sat a person feeding a sparrow. They were wearing really formal clothes, and looked tense, focusing on the bird in their hand. Lang, very confused, decided to inch closer to investigate. Hopefully the bird he was feeding wouldn't attack him, like every other bird he's met in the past two decades.
As the bird kept feeding, Owen's attention was completely on it. But it all broke as soon as the sparrow chirped, in response to the one person approaching them. The boy looked up, and oh, threadless.
"Hello." He said almost rehearsed. Owen stared blankly at him, not recognising him. Who was this?
Lang hesitated, before asking "Um, are you okay? Y-you looked kind of upset."
Ah, did he now? Owen slowly nodded his head, still staring blankly all the same. "Are you ok?" His head tilted a little, curious as to why he wanted to know.
Lang tilted his head also, considering them. Were they upset? He couldn't tell anymore, but now he's started talking and oh no he hasn't said anything. "Uh," Lang said, very smoothly, very conversational-like, "Mind if I sit down?"
"Sit down." He shuffled over, patting the spot next to him. He then ignored the man in favour of the little bird in his palms, who went back to feeding off the seeds.
Lang did as he was told, still keeping his eye on the other person out of vague concern. He seemed more focused on the sparrow than Lang, anyway, and they were a peaceful sight, with the bird happily eating from the guy's hand. Lang was content to just sit there, but he needed to make sure the bird person was actually okay, and that involves talking. Conversation.
"Uh," Lang said again, also very conversational-like. "I-it's a nice day, isn't it? I thought I would take a walk, but now I'm kind of lost, haha. Ha." Great job Lang, you did it!!
"It's nice." Owen turned to him, blinking a few times. "It's not nice being lost. Lost means you were going somewhere, isn't it? Where were you going?" He was asking out of curiosity, not that he felt he'd be able to help him get to where he wanted to be.
Lang was surprised at the question, turning to look at the bird man, only for a second. Then he looked away again, to the trees. "I don't know," he said. "Where I was going. I suppose I'll find out when I get there." He turned back to the bird man with a small smile. "It doesn't really matter at the moment, anyway."
"Mm..." Was all Owen said, more focused on the bird. It continued to peck away at the seeds in his hands, before it seemed to grow bored. It hopped onto Owen's wrist and glanced over to the other man, tilting its head at Lang in curiosity.
Lang tensed a little when he saw the bird move form the bird man's wrist, bad memories flitting through his mind (oh god, the beaks, the talons), but the sight of it tilting its head made him burst into laughter.
"It looks just like you," Lang managed to snicker out.
The sparrow chirped at that. Perhaps out of annoyance being compared to a mere human, perhaps acknowledging what had been said about it. Owen merely chuckled under that blank expression of his, and stretched his hand out to Lang. The sparrow hopped to the edge of his finger, grasping tightly onto a bright pink plaster on it.
Lang jumped a little when the bird moved closer, but the earlier comparison made him relax a little more around the hell spawn. Curious, he stuck out his finger to the bird's beak. Probably not the best idea, but it's too late now.
As the finger was put out to the bird, the sparrow didn't peck it - instead it hopped onto Lang. It chirped loudly at him, as if it wanted to be fed.
Seeing his little creature wanting to eat, Owen nudged Lang and held out his hands full of seed ready to pour into his hands.
