Owen looked some more. "I want to remember your name. What is your name?"

Lang, who had been watching the bird in his hands, froze again. Uh oh. "Uh."
Well, I could keep giving that fake name. "Uh, I'm Li," Lang should really stop talking to apprentices, he's going to sweat himself dry at this rate. "What's your name?"

"Hello Li." He said back, smiling with his eyes. "I am Owen." He looked at the bird, then back to Lang.

Seeing his expression, Lang was immediately filled with regret. He tried to avoid Owen's eyes by looking at the bird, but it had the same expression, blinking at Lang innocently.
I'm his enemy, he realized. Bird man - Owen - was just sitting here, on this bench, doing nothing, and now Lang's just here feeding him lies. Trying to make a friend.
Could we even be friends?
"I'm sorry, this was a mistake," Lang muttered, shoving the bird in Owen's direction. The bird flapped its wings indignantly, but Lang didn't notice. I need to leave.

Owen just watched the man up and leave. He wanted to object, but in the end he said nothing. He just watched Lang go...
You're not going inside today, it's alright.
Hospitals made him uneasy. Gladius Gratia Hospital made him feel afraid. The worst part was, he couldn't tell anyone why he especially disliked this hospital.
No. Dislike would be too shallow a term.
He was mortified to be here.
It was just the emergency bay, where the ambulances rushed the dying through the doors. All he had to do was wait here and cut the thread before the human was inside. Then he'd run, run far away from here, and not even look back.
He crushed himself against the wall just around the corner from the bay, eagerly listening for the sirens carrying his job. He clutched his phone in one hand, and his pen in the other. Soon, he told himself. He could hold out for a couple more minutes...

Months after joining Clement, Lang still doesn't know why he wanted to live in the hospital. The emergency wing was the worst, where death and sickness and grief clung to the walls, so tangible he could almost taste it. Made him remember unpleasant things. Unfortunately, he needed to pass the emergency wing to reach his room. Lang was almost used to it, but he could feel the queasiness rise in his throat well before he even reached his destination.
He was approaching the emergency room from the parking lot, taking deep breaths, when he found a familiar hat in the distance. It was Owen (his -- friend??), peering around the corner to the emergency wing. Lang immediately brightened, and he was about to greet Owen when he realized where they were. This was the hospital. Clement's hospital. What was he doing here?
His mouth felt dry.
It couldn't be.

Owen kept looking at his phone. The next minutes were an endless loop of watching the numbers on the lock screen and darting a look around the corner. He'd often heard of the term 'having a knot in your stomach', and it was bizzarely the most accurate way to describe how he was feeling right now. One would never know how those words really felt in the moment, unless one had experienced it before.
He had a minute to go, and the sirens started to blare from down the street. He bravely took a step out from his corner and clenched his fists tightly. He boldly walked towards the parking bay where the ambulance would stop, past all the emergency staff waiting to receive their dead patient. Owen had no capacity in him to feel sorry for their dedication waiting out here - his eyes were wide with fear, his hands trembling from the idea that he could be right behind those sliding doors waiting to take him into some twisted place...
Owen felt no need to hide his exasperated breathing - most people here weren't even seeing him at this point - and he was fighting to keep his legs on track. He saw the ambulance arrive, the doors open and out burst a red thread. The patient was already crashing, and it was all a blur between resuscitating them and taking them into the hospital. All the boy did was scramble for the thread, and he ripped it apart with his pen. Once he saw the ends of it disappear, he hightailed it out of there. He ran, not looking, nor caring, where he was going. As long as it was away from here.

Like Owen, Lang's feelings at this moment were best described as 'having a knot in your stomach,' if for completely different reasons. Sirens filled the air, and Lang watched Owen bravely march to the approaching ambulance, and -
Lang feels nauseous. Of course he would stumble on a reap. His friend's reap. In a hospital. This hospital. Of course.
Since it was This Hospital, Lang also knew that there was a guard on duty at all hours of the day, and they would have probably heard the sirens by now. They would also come investigate in the hopes of finding fresh apprentice meat. He could see someone now, in the corner of his eye; threadless, intimidating, stalking across the hospital parking lot behind him and Owen.
Finally, the thread was cut, and Lang got one glimpse of Owen's panicked face before he ran. The other hunter had a hungry grin stretched on his face. Lang couldn't breathe.
Owen was veering in the hunter's direction, and Lang was never very religious but he was praying now as he tore through the emergency staff and grabbed Owen's hand, hoping to drag them both away from the hunter's path.

Owen just ran, and ran...
He screamed too at a touch, a grip, but he kept running. He tried to break away from the hand over his, but he couldn't. Why be so polite and take his hand? Why not his wrist? He didn't know why, but his gut told him to stop fighting. The boy ran towards the hand, not bothering to check who it belonged to. As long as he got away from that dreaded hospital. He hated hospitals, they made him feel so uneasy, so trapped, like he was dreaming. And he didn't want to dream of the old days. Or was this a dream to be away from the old days?
No, this was all real, wasn't it? He didn't care. All he knew was there were monsters beyond the ones in his mind.

Lang felt Owen's hand go limp in his, so he took the opportunity to drag both of them away from the hunter, matching their paces as Owen ran. Losing pursuers was a skill he had perfected over the centuries, and this was barely a challenge, as the hunter quickly admitted defeat once they saw Lang. Probably recognized him as an ally.
Lang tugged on Owen's hand. He probably should have grabbed Owen's wrist, but oh well. "Owen, can you hear me?" He attempts.

Owen wasn't sure they were out of danger, but one thing was for sure - he was still panicked. "H-How do you know my name?!" He demanded with as much authority he could with a shaky voice. "W-Who are you...?" His hand tightened around Lang's, tugging back too.

Lang's eyebrows scrunched together.
"I'm La- Li, Owen. We've met, remember?"
What if he doesn't remember? Even though he vaguely remembers that it isn't possible for apprentices to forget him no matter their SA level, Lang still worries, and suddenly the world seemed that much emptier again. He shakes his head, brushing his own worries away, and checks again to make sure the other hunter has left.
"Don't worry about me, I promise I won't hurt you," Lang says as soothingly as possible, a long-forgotten tone. He looks back to Owen. "Are you okay?"

"L-Li..." he recalled the name... he remembered it. Owen clasped his other hand over it and held onto it tight. His gaze was fleeting, lost in fear and panic, unsure of what to focus on. "Y-You won't... h-hurt me..?" he was unsure what that meant. His hands were shaking, head shaking from side to side. He was not ok. If he had to ever see that hospital again, he would... no, he couldn't...
Nobody knew about this hospital, the truth behind it... and he couldn't tell anyone about the truth either.

Lang nods vigorously, relieved. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you," he says with that same soothing tone, the one he forgot. He tugs on Owen's hand, squeezing back, leading them farther away from the hospital. He's pretty familiar with the nearby streets after all the times he's wandered out on his own.
Owen still looked pretty shaken, so Lang rambled out some more comforting words, "See? We're away from the hospital, and the hunter's gone, and you're fine, you're not hurt, and everything's fine." At this point, he doesn't know who he's trying to convince more.

"W-Why won't you hurt me?" Owen looked at him wide eyed. "Why would you tell me that..?" He held on tightly. He'd be alright, wouldn't he? He took another look around and sure enough, they were out of danger for now. Owen breathed heavily, almost exaggeratedly, but his heart was still pounding at a million miles per hour.
