HAUNTED GARDENS: NORTH GATE You walk into the gardens on the outskirts of New York, through the North Gate. You can remember what it looks like during the day, open and bright with all the colors of autumn blanketing the greenery in its signature foliage. But the moonlight seems to drain all its life, turning bright golds to murky browns, vivid pinks to dark blood, the rich ground to deep pools of shadows. This is a large garden, it would probably take you all night to get across. Through the open wrought iron gate, you walk straight into a flower garden in full bloom. While trees rid their leaves, these flowers open their petals. They thrive under the brisk autumn air and the anticipation of winter. The area was thick with fall flowers in their beautiful deep jewel hues. Small glowing lights line the brick pathway through the flower gardens and overhead, string lights dangle from pole to pole. The path circles around the flowers and leads to hedges beyond. It almost looked unreal, as if the whole area was a hazy dream or fairytale. This place was empty of human life but further ahead, you can hear some chatter of merry voices.

Gabrielle stood there, her mouth hanging wide open. She couldn't believe her eyes. Rubbing them furiously, she shut her mouth again and finally approached one of the flowers to touch them. Since when was this such a beautiful place?
Just as her hand was inches from touching one of the petals, a noise distracted her. Turning her head towards the source, she let her hand vanish behind her back. Look officer, she hadn't done anything illegal, seriously. But there wasn't any officer, it just seemed to be voices carrying over here from further ahead. Someone else seemed to be drawn in by this place. She was not surprised, who wouldn't. Curious about who else was out here, she followed the sound.
"Hello! Anyone there?", she asked loudly.

A rumor.
The small chance for people to see those they left behind or of those who had passed previously. Anyone who loved anyone, would go see if it was true. The chances to see your loved ones once more? Who wouldn't want that? Sure, even she'd want that... but Eilis wasn't getting her hopes up, though, the rumors did intrigue her; peak her curiosity, to be exact. To go risk it all being a trap, or give into her childish curious ways... With no time left to contemplate her possible actions, Eilis grabbed her messenger bag, packed it with a few things for the road, and headed out.
Up to the north gate, she stood for a second then made her way through. Her delicate hands combed through her hair while walking to pull the red and brown locks into ponytail. Instantly the scenery had changed into this whimsical fantasy adventure. It was truly more than her overly curious mind could ever imagine. Lost in awe, her mind spaced out and her body moved forward not caring if anyone was around. The woman came to a tree and just stopped to take a seat and let her mind process the beauty. The chatter in the background just added on to the experience. Though, Eilis did know she'd need to come back to reality eventually.
Just... a moment more...

This might have been a bad idea...
Penelope dug her hands further into her penguin hoodie pockets helping shield her from the oncoming wind. She despised being cold. But that was a moot point that didn't answer the question of why was she still walking towards this garden. She'd heard rumors that you could meet your dearly departed here but she didn't think her brother nor mother had left this world yet, if she could remember... man, had it really been a year since she left Death's HQ? It was harder to keep up with who died after she'd left. She pondered how her old team was - Penelope's brain instantly hit a "Don't Go There" wall. It was done, finished, so move on it'd told her, obviously not a moment too soon because she was standing right in front of the New York garden gates.
She looked up at the iron of the North Gate. No turning back now right? After all rumors are just rumors. Bring it on. Penelope smirks through her bird mask as she steps inside. Her footsteps soft as she sees a beautiful garden and two other women inside. At least she wouldn't be alone in this endeavor but she did wish she had Stanley's company for a moment. Penelope parishes the thought, she was sure he wasn't a fan of scares or even rumored scares, bah, she'd be fine. Least she could do now was be friendly.
"Hello ladies." She walks up to them with a wave. "Are you here because of the rumor too?"

It was a good thing that fear was a rare emotion for Kit these days; otherwise, the warning paired with the rumor would have discouraged them from coming here tonight. They passed through the gate, and hidden beneath the warm cover of a sweatshirt, scarf, and a beanie, they still found themselves shuddering in the cool gusts of wind. It wasn't even winter yet... That wasn't what they were concerned with, though. They'd only come to see if the rumor was true. It was believable, keeping in mind all of the things Kit had seen that went against common sense... for example, the fact that they existed right now.
A few people were there, and they spared them a short glance. It seemed like they were talking, and only one of them looked familiar, so they decided not to greet them (maybe just for now) and kept walking, eyeing the blooming flowers and twinkling lights. The amount of chatter around the area was a little strange to them, but of course there were others who missed their loved ones. The place was beautiful, and they couldn't overlook that, but the probability that it was misleadingly so seemed high.

This was a bad idea, and Harvey knew it even as he stepped into the poetically beautiful moonlit flower patch, fingers drumming uneasily on the hilt of one of his blades. This place was pretty, but it just lit up all the red lights. Rumors about seeing your ascended loved ones? Yeah, right. Sounded like a load of BS used to lure in sentimental apprentices, ripe for hunter picking.
Aaaaand that's exactly why there had to be a weapon to collect somewhere in those gardens. Granted, Harvey wasn't entirely sure if that particular incident was directly related to the people drawn in by the rumors, and either way, he didn't have any reason to go at night, especially when none of the guardians he knew were free (or willing). But maybe it was curiosity that drew him in at this hour; what harm could a little peek do? Just hop in, and hop out. Besides, it might even be more dangerous in the daylight; at least in the dark, he was sure of more apprentices showing up. It was a popular rumor, after all, and aside from providing safety in numbers, Harvey might be able to do some convincing to get people out before trouble started, as much as he hated being a killjoy.
Haha, sure, man. Just keep justifying this dumb excuse for an adventure.
A shout from the distance stopped Harvey from scolding himself any further, and he turned towards it to find a small group of people over on one side. A squint confirmed no threads; most likely apprentices drawn in by the rumors. Good; at least he was right about that. He walked over to the group and called in response, "Yup, looks like we've got a small party up here."

Before she knew it, there was a small crowd gathered. Gabrielle twirled around and nodded at the penguin. What an odd person but the costume was so cute!
"Yeah! I want to see if I can meet my mom!", she replied frankly and glanced curiously at the guy. He had funny clothes. Not that she judged people by their clothes.....ah no use in lying to herself, she did. Playing with a strand of her hair she let her eyes trail over to the lit path. It was tempting, so very tempting but now that she met people here with the same goal, wouldn't it be much more fun to go together? The more the merrier they said and if she could show off her new friends to her mom, she would like that too. even if they dressed funnily. She straightened up her posture.
"My name is Gabrielle", she announced. "And who are you guys?"

Penelope adjusts her hoodie. "I'm Penny." She opted to use her nickname instead to save on explanations (she was grateful she had a mask on right now). "I'm here to see if someone I love moved on I suppose, although I'm not so sure about this "party" however." She nods to the young man who just walked up to their small group. "it's real nice that you want to see your mother Gabrielle." She turns to the newly arrived guests. "How about yourselves, what are you here for?"

And... that moment was gone.
Before Eilis knew it, she was surrounded. Surrounded by something that was just some rumor that was obviously too good to be true. The woman stood and looked at the group, some further from her than others; one she instantly recognized. Eilis flashed a smile but had it retreat as names were asked. They were in living world... names being known could be detrimental; that's without even looking for the threads. She took an unnoticeable forced glance and behold... no threads.
Eilis smiled at the ones surrounding her once more. Her real name would be just plain stupid to give... her middle name, Cliona, though, why not? Of course, waiting on her own introduction would be best, only to be safe. "It's nice to meet you all." Nipping her lip lightly, she continued. "I actually came here out of sheer curiousity..." Her head turned to the two males, only they were left.

Kit slowed and eventually stopped their steps, listening to the chatter behind them. More people were showing up, and they seemed to be introducing themselves. Kit was still by no means knowledgeable about being an apprentice, but they figured that introducing themselves with what they went by would be stupid. Hunters were apparently a part of the rumor, too, and any of those seemingly-friendly individuals could be one. While they wouldn't mind dying a second time all that much, they didn't want it done at the hands of a stranger or out of simple bloodlust. Maybe they weren't so above fear after all.
For the time being, they just stood, still looking around the area while eavesdropping on the conversation nearby. In the back of their mind, they went through aliases that they could use, though they came up with next to nothing. They remained silent. They had planned on going through the garden alone, but perhaps that wasn't the best idea.

EVERYONE The cool autumn wind swept across the gardens in mid conversation, shaking the string lights and the flower pedals awake. The lights shook and the pedals danced in the air before slowly coming down to the stone ground.
At that moment, over the hedge, a bit of a distance from where all the apprentices are standing, was a swelling of music intermixed with joyous chatting. Classical violin music fill the air. Now, one would be able to see a small standing sign on it that was covered up by the darkness before. It read "Biotechnics' Company Halloween Party" in an elegant golden script. It looks like Biotechnics rented out the area for a celebration and from the sound of it, it seemed like people are enjoying themselves.
The sign had a small arrow under it that pointed to an opening gap in the hedge, which the pathway they were all standing on leads up to.
What do you do?

Okay, forget about "party" in the dancing sense, then. This was more like an awkward group of JRPG protagonists, complete with the, er, penguin sidekick. Harvey gave the penguin a long, hard look; penguins were always dangerous and untrustworthy, especially in this situation. In any case, the distrust in the air was evident; Harvey supposed at least a few of these people had been planning to go alone. Well, whatever; he was here to gatecrash and hopefully hold back anyone who was hoping to do some crazy solo adventuring.
"Harvey," he shrugged. If any of the group members was a hunter, he figured they wouldn't pause to politely ask for his name before stabbing him anyway. "I'm also looking for something...Can't say it's a someone, though." He briefly glanced over the one person who hadn't given a name before turning to the girl called Gabrielle. There was a twinkle in her eye, like she was really hoping to see a miracle. He would have said something, but the sudden breeze stole the words from his mouth, and the music it carried distracted him. Surprised, he turned to the source of the sound. A company party? Seriously? Was this some sort of wicked coincidence or a weird trap? "Hey...would you look at that. An actual party," he grinned despite himself, pointing at the lights in the distance.

Gabrielle nodded at everyone, even the one who didn't introduce themselves. She would just make up a name for them then, maybe they couldn't talk. She really should have learned sign language!
When Harvey turned towards her, she directed her attention at him, but that was almost as soon over as it started, as a real party seemed to begin. She wasn't all that fond of classical music and company party suggested that it could be a really boring adult thing where people stood around and nipped sparkling wine out of high glasses, but better than nothing, she supposed.
Enthusiastically she nodded, when Harvey pointed out the lights in the distance. Then again. Wait. They were all here for the rumours, nit the party. Without so much as a second though she grabbed the sleeves of the people closest to her which was the person with pink hair and Cliona and started dragging them towards the path through the hedges.
"We can check this out when we met my mom!", she declared and forcefully went ahead.

"A party?" Really? What joy... who'd throw a party at a time like this? Wasn't this curious adventure for the fulfillment of seeing if the rumors were true? Not for a trip down the rabbit hole. The irish lass stepped back a bit to lean against the tree, only to have her sleeve grabbed and pulled by the one named Gabrielle. What luck!
With no time to really say she was going to stay back a bit, they inched closer to the abyss of hedges, then inside. At least Kit was with her. She knew him, though it was only one meeting before hand, but still. She KNEW he wasn't a hunter. This woman who pulled her seemed too nice... and so did the one in the penguin hoodie. What did she really know of judging people? None of them had threads. Not a single one. She sighed going with the flow and pulling Penny in with. Eilis at least had her weapon if anything went bad.
Eilis Cliona caught her footing to properly walk with no problem while being held by the sleeves of her think sweater. Letting the Penguin go for a second, her hands dug into the bag to grab a small beanie to out on. Her eyes flashed forward once again while they were just surrounded by the hedges; like an old garden maze. Oh god.... All five were on their way to god knows where.

Kit pretty much tuned out of the conversation when the music started, taking another glance around. A party was beginning, apparently. Classical music was not something they enjoyed listening to, but it did fit the setting that the elegant flowers and lights created. Before they could decide what they wanted to do, a hand tight on their sleeve decided for them. They were just a bit startled by that, but seeing that it was just the particularly enthusiastic girl dragging them along with Eilis... or, Cliona, they relaxed.
"You don't gotta drag me. I wanna see someone, too." They said, at a quieter volume than they usually spoke in. They were relatively comfortable with this trio, if the original five ended up splitting up. Eilis was a friend of Maxwell, and they'd spoken to her briefly. She was pretty friendly, and the girl named Gabrielle seemed to be, as well.
