Maybe he should have phrased it differently. "Have you seen people cut lines?" he pointed to her own white glow above her head again. "Dead people cut lines for dead people."

The question made Saoirse have a moment of silence to herself...her breath taken away from her as she realized what he asked. He was talking about the people killing others when they cut the red thread...wasn't he? No that can't be right.
"You really aren't making much sense," Saoirse finally got out, a huff escaping from her lips, "Dead people cutting the lines of dead people? Really?"

So she had seen it before... that was something she couldn't possibly deny. He nodded to himself and there was a twinkle in his eye. Now they were getting somewhere...
"Why are those red?" he tilted his head. "Why is yours white?" he tilted it the other way. "Where is mine?"

"I'm still trying to figure that out...not exactly easy to find out when you're the only one you know that can see weird shit and not have something wrong with some part of your body," Saoirse replied, giving the waitress her credit card to pay for her meal. "But now you're just acting like you're from that Paranormal activity movie.....or at least you're just being really damn creepy."

He nodded. He knew what that was like too. Owen seemed to sit back up straight when she called him creepy. He got that a lot.
"White is for alive." he pointed to her. "None is for dead." he pointed to himself. "Red is for in between." he explained. "Cutting is to get from red to none."

"I got the gist of it myself...the white and red anyway," Saoirse replied....nails tapping on the counter like the devil was on her trail, eyes glancing down at the half eaten BLT and got a waitress to grab a box for her. Might as well save it for when her appetite reared its head again. "Look, I don't need you to explain me every single thing about it. Still don't see how in god's name you could be dead when you're not some sort of zombie or ghost. All I know is that cutting the thread kills someone and that shit is against the law."

She didn't understand it properly. "Cutting is not killing." He shook his head. "We don't kill. We help people become dead. We have to help people become dead. Red means they need to become dead."

"Are you stupid? Helping people to become dead is the same as killing them you dimwit," Saoirse snapped at Owen, tone sharp and cold with her scowling face. "Killing someone is against the law. Has whatever school you went to never taught you about basic laws?" Her other hand laid against the counter, clenched into a ball so tightly that her knuckles were starting to turn white.

His face flashed anger as she snapped back, but he took a breath. He was more on edge lately and he also knew he wasn't the best at speaking. Perhaps he had to be a bit clearer... "They're already dead... But dead people have somewhere to go, isn't it?" He breathed again, facial features evening out to its usual stoic look. "Cutting helps them to go that somewhere."

"No they are not dead already," she growled, a sort of fire that burned in her eyes. "Cutting their thread is what kills them...not what color it is."
She'd note that her waitress would hand her back her credit card along with the receipt and a pen, and Saoirse would give a proper tip and sign the receipt before returning her gaze to Owen. "And I will not let anyone murder another human being under my watch as long as I live."

She really wasn't getting it, was she? Owen leaned in and looked her right in the eye. "How do you know?" His face was blank but his voice growled with anger. "We don't murder. Hunters murder."

"Because I am a police officer.....I've seen what happens to those whose thread is cut. They're struggling...alive...but struggling....until their thread is cut. That's when they die. You tell me how that isn't murder." Saoirse looked at Owen straight in the eye, meeting his gaze as she spoke every word. It didn't seem like she was going to back down...not on this.

"They are not alive." He insisted, furrowing his brows slightly this time. "They struggle because they are not alive. It is not murder. They are already dead."

"Bullshit." Saoirse would glare at Owen, placing her credit card in her wallet and putting the BLT in the box they left for her. "They struggle because they're still breathing. That means they are alive. When you cut their thread that stops. That's when they die...that's when they can't go back."

Owen shook his head. "They struggle because they have to go somewHeRE!" his voice raised in anger, but settled down as he realised it himself. "You don't know the dead go somewhere. You're not dead. The dead get stuck. I am dead." he held out his hand abruptly. "Give me your hand."
