Car accidents.
They were so common in a big city like New York.
Owen stood at the scene while the ambulance took one of the drivers away. The other died at the scene, and he was there for him. He put his pen back into his vest and walked away. No one would remember him there anyway.
The boy rejoined the crowd, watching the crews of emergency services cleaning up everything. Eventually he decided to leave. He'd seen this too many times. It was boring. He wandered off at least a block or two before he found somewhere to settle down.
He entered the small diner and sat at the bar.

The day started off slow for Saoirse, her routine rushed by the extra couple of minutes she decided to steal to let her eyes rest a little while longer. Besides, the later she was, the later she'd start working on the next case that needed solving.
It was when she got to the police office right on time that she realized no new cases had come in for her. With a sigh escaping her lips and paperwork to file out, she'd sit down and get most of it done before the rumblings of the afternoon alerted her to the fact she forgot to eat this morning.
Well that was smart.
Taking a break for lunch, she'd bundle herself against the winds that whipped around the city in this cold time of year and walked until she happened upon a diner she liked to frequent. It was rather small and crowded around this time but she'd weasel her way in and find a seat on the bar. Why waste a perfectly good table when you're dining alone? Other people can use it. Besides, she wouldn't be long anyway...just a quick bite to eat and then back to her paperwork for the rest of the day.
That was of course, when she finally opened her phone to find all sorts of messages. Car accident right near her....would explain the flashing lights. One was already dead, other on its way to a hospital....Saoirse let out another sigh. At least one of them has a chance of living. But car accidents aren't in her job criteria anymore, and so she pressed the lock button on her phone and kept herself firmly seated at the bar. What a crappy addition to this already pitiful day.
At least this diner had good sandwiches.

He noticed someone sat next down to him. Looking over, it was a police officer. He recognised the uniform by now. Where there were accidents, there was always police. He kept looking at her curiously, wondering if she was on the scene earlier.
Perhaps she was. She looked a little grumpy. Her white thread was floating happily above her head, and he couldn't help but look at it for a moment as he waited to be served.

Saoirse expected with the amount of people in this diner and the number of wait staff they usually had on hand, it would take longer than usual for her to get her usual order of a BLT and a coffee. And well, she wasn't wrong. It did take awhile for them to finally get to her.
What did felt wrong, however, was the feeling like someone was looking at her. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea to be walking about in her police uniform when on lunch break but god damnit she just wanted her sandwich. It wasn't helping that there people staring at her like she had two heads. Particularly the person next to her at the bar, who seemed to have taken a liking to something that she, herself could also see. A white string...thread...whatever it was, that wrapped around her and connected to her where her heart should be.
Saoirse's reminder that there was something that she still needed to figure out and unravel. A mystery.
Looking at the boy from her peripheral vision, she'd almost take a double take when she realized something weird. This kid, who seemed no older than a high school freshman, did not have a string around him like all the others that were hanging about in this diner. How peculiar.
"Hey, I know the uniform is kind of an intimidating thing...but you don't need to stare at me like I have two heads," Saoirse would speak up to Owen, loud enough for only the two of them could hear as her head turned so her amber eyes could fully see the apprentice. "I'm sure there are other interesting things to look at here while you wait for your stuff."

She looked once, then once again. She could see him. "Sorry." He said almost monotonously. Odd, did she know this was a special diner? Owen didn't. Or maybe he did. He probably forgot somewhere along the way.
The servers were still living, though. His hot chocolate came from behind the counter, piled high with at least three extra marshmallows. He plonked two of them in and proceeded to eat the ones that were left.
On occasion he would peek at her and her thread while he drank. She might forget all this later. If she wasn't too aware, he thought.

"It's fine...," she'd mumble back...a sigh leaving her lips once more. It was almost as if he wasn't really looking at her, per se, but something near her or around her.
Her thoughts would drift away from the moment then the clatter of a cup rang against her ears and looked over to find Owen with a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows. That was a rather impeccable amount of marshmallows. This diner really knows how to overdo it....and yet it was still rather cute.
But he kept looking at her as he drank. At first Saoirse would try to ignore it and order her food and wait..the kid almost blurry when she didn't focus on him..but then she'd just bring her focus back to him noting where he was looking. Up...and almost around her....almost as if he could see the white thread too.
Weird.
"Did you find something interesting to look at or do I still look like I have two heads?" she'd half joke, a lighter tone entering her speech as she glanced over at the threadless boy.

Ah, she saw him again. Perhaps she knew. "You can see what I don't have, isn't it?" he asked her. He looked over at her for a moment with smiling eyes, before going back to sip more of his drink. Perhaps he should stop staring at her. Maybe he shouldn't have even said that... though she'd forget, right..? Humans had trouble holding onto the dead like that.

"How......." Saoirse asked, glancing up and down at Owen. He seemed....rather off compared to those in the diner. The weird dress..the words he spoke. It was like he was the puzzle piece that didn't fit into an almost complete picture. "I didn't even.....ask about it."

"You asked me twice." he said casually. "Normal people don't ask me twice. You're not normal." He looked at her, putting his cup down. "You know you're not normal, isn't it..."

"I asked you about.....look, I don't remember asking you about anything that was missing..." Saoirse would start, glancing away from Owen when she heard the sound of a cup being put in front of her. Right...she ordered coffee. "But if you notice it too......" does that mean I'm not alone... she wanted to say, sounds dying on her tongue as she took a sip of the bitter coffee. It took her a moment but she finally remembered the question she wanted to ask. "Why is it not normal that I asked you twice?"

"See, you're not normal..." he looked at her intently when she admitted it. "Normal people don't notice me twice. I was just looking. People don't look at me looking twice." And then there was her double take earlier. She was one of the more aware ones, at least.

"Tell that to the people who tell me that I'm perfectly healthy and normal," Saoirse chuckled to herself, glancing over at Owen. "I mean I know you're dressed kinda weird for a teen but...I highly doubt it's not normal for me to be able to see you. I mean you're sitting right here in front of me....and you were served a drink. Kinda hard for you to be a hallucination if that was the case."

"It's... different," he smiled with his eyes, "for people like you. For people like me. When I was alive. You're like me when I was alive. You already know something about me." he pointed to the white thread above her head.

“Ok now you’re just fuckin’ with me,” Saoirse replied, her expression turning into a frown as she stared at the kid before her. “I’ve never met you in my life….although I see a lot of people very day..probably forgot most of them by now.” She’d continue to sip the coffee, noting the BLT that was also put in front of her slowly losing its warmth. “Second of all you ain’t dead. Walking Dead doesn’t actually exist. If it did, we’d all be running towards the nearest Walmart. And believe me, it’d probably be a royal pain in the ass to deal with a bunch of crazy city folk trying to survive in a Walmart super store.”
Saoirse would sigh, noting the one thing she got from him that was true…the white strings..threads….that surrounded every person there including herself except for the one she was talking to. “But you ain’t wrong about the white….strings…threads…whatever. They’re there….annoying as all hell lemme tell you…but they’re there.”

"Do I look like a zombie?" he tilted his head and his eyes widened, curious. He knew others back in HQ who loved that kind of stuff. "Zombies aren't real..."
Although, she did seem confused about the strings. As she would naturally be. "Do you know why they're there?" he took a sip more of his drink.
