As they walked along the path, Winona couldn't quite think of anything to say. Some casual conversation would make this trek a little less eerie, but most of the questions she'd thought of ("Where are you from?", "So, what kind of soldier?", etc) were both boring and borderline insensitive. So, she was mostly occupied with protecting herself from clawing branches, preserving her battery power (turning it off when more moonlight shone through), and her thoughts.
What exactly was she expecting out of this asinine trip? Did she really think that an ascended loved one would want to come back to a place as miserable as earth after tasting the afterlife? And why would she want to talk to him--them--then not see them for however long this grueling job lasted?
Feeling much more gloomy than when she started, she only snapped out of it when Heng spoke. Hm, the path to the waterfall went further into the woods...with more hiding places for hunters, in her opinion. But the Arboretum was closed...well, she'd never visited it before, and perhaps they could just look.
"We could take a look at that arboretum, if you'd like. I've never seen it." she said, turning to Heng. "But you can decide."
((So sorry for the delay!))

Heng thought that a waterfall sounded nicer than a closed down building in the middle of a er, haunted, garden.
"Waterfalls sound nice," he said blandly.

The redhead frowned at the urgency in what little he could hear of the girl's yelling. What kind of sick fuck would trap a beaten and bruised child like this...? The fear in her eyes, the frustration in her body language, and above all, what he heard out of her made him reach for his carving knife, drawing it out of his pouch.
It wasn't clear, but he could have sworn she said 'behind you'.
Pulling Esther away from the water's edge and a few steps away from where they were earlier on, Joakim held his weapon at the ready. Was something in the area? It was doing a damn good job staying out of sight.
"Keep your eyes peeled," he told Esther in a hushed whisper, "When shit hits the fan, get your chrysanthemum out and get out of here." Occasionally, he'd glance over to the child to see if she was alright, then back to his surroundings. Whatever was out there, Joakim would take it on, with or without his threadcutter.
Which reminded him.
This was the second time he gets caught in a shitty situation and didn't have his axe on-hand. The absurdity made Joakim chuckle to himself. 'Ja, fuck my luck.' he mused.

Was there someone else out here? Lurking out in the woods or somewhere hidden, waiting to ambush them. This didn't seem like a supernatural occurrence anymore so much as a trap set laid out for gullible (or adventurous) apprentices to stumble into.
Esther didn't object to being pulled away from the very exposed shore, but all the same, the forest seemed more and more ominous. She cast an uneasy glance back at it, scissors clenched in her hand, ready to be used as an improvised weapon assuming the worst happened --
Her other hand patted her right pocket, making sure the chrysanthemum was still there. It was.
"Joakim." If memory served her correctly, then that hunting knife wasn't his threadcutter. "행운을 빌어요."

LINCOLN The boy laughed carelessly at Lincoln's startled reaction as if they were having a normal conversation midday in a park. His laugh echoed off the glass walls of the conservatory. "How did you get up here?" He asked back with a wide grin. "And why are you here, dressed like that?" He said, looking up and down at Lincoln's own fashion choices. The boy stood up on the branch and his green eyes flickered to his feet to balance himself. He held his hand out like a tightrope walker, about to perform a daring stunt.
"My dad told me to dress like this today, he said I needed to look my best for mom! I'm playing hide and seek with him and my sister. I just finished closing my eyes and counting to 10! My sis is just a kid so it will be pretty easy to find her I think!” He prattled on to Lincoln cheerfully whether he was listening or not.
"Hey, whacha looking at?" He trotted playfully over to Lincoln and looked down into the same spot he was surveying. Nothing but darkness and leaves from this angle. "Hm. Boring!" He sighed and rolled his eyes before backing off.
"Hey, I know! Do you want to help my find my dad and sis? Oh and you didn't answer any of my questions! And also, I'm not suppose to talk to strangers, so I will need to know your name. And is your hair naturally green? Is that what happens when you eat too much broccoli?" He said this all very rapidly, like a dam bursting open. His questions and tone was genuine though. He seemed so happy to finally get to talk to someone.
HENG, WINONA To the waterfall it is then! The path led deeper into the forest and it grew no lighter. In fact, the trees passed by endlessly- they were all starting to look the same. If there was no trail to guide the pair, then it would be very easy to get lost within the repetition of the forest.
After a while, the sound of rushing water was heard. Slowly it got louder but never defying. The terrain got rougher, more stones and rocks than dirt. The trees started to thin out until it opened up to a clearing. There lies a waterfall, definitely not huge by any means. It was tiered, stacking up the rocky cliffs. Green plants and moss happily thrived around it. They were by the pool, down in the bottom of the chain, and the path curved around it. The water was shockingly clear, one could see the brown pebbly floor under it. And there was large stepping stones across the pull, for more adventurous visitors. It would have been lovely during the day.
But oddly enough, there was someone already on the stepping stones and it blended almost perfectly with the shadows of the night. It was a big cat. Wait no. It was more than just a cat. It was definitely...a panther. It shifted its body, the sleek muscles under its fur noticeable in the moonlight. It was tearing at something bloodied under its paw, ripping it apart with its teeth, before it suddenly looked up with yellow eyes and stared directly at Heng and Winona.
What do you do?
JOAKIM, ESTHER The moment Joakim and Esther got back into the forest’s edge, the girl on the rock island started to shake her head furiously. She mouthed unheard words to them, trying desperately to tell them something more. Finally that something came through to the other side.
“DON’T GO --!! HE’S IN THE FOR--T!! GET OUT OF HERE!!!!!”
Suddenly behind you, in the forest, there was a stuttered click. A cocking of a gun.
An unkempt-looking, middle-aged man stood up from a bush several yards away. He was wearing a dirty white lab coat, stained with dirt and who knows what else. He had boots on, splattered with mud and wear. His glasses catched on to what little light there was and shined at a distance in the dark before he moved to reveal vivid, green eyes behind the glass. There was a soft white thread wrapped around him for those that could see it, barely visible. Human. With shocking ease and speed (as if he spent time practicing for this moment), he lifted up a shotgun to his shoulder and aimed.
“Well there goes all subtlety.” Said the man, his startlingly calm voice not matching his disheveled appearance.
Then he fired at both of them.

Her second warning came through much clearer. The sound coming from behind them made Joakim tense up. That wasn't a bladed weapon.
"Fuck--!!" he turned around, enough to catch sight of a figure lining up his shot. He should move. NOW. But Esther wasn't reacting fast enough... So he shoved her aside, as far as he could physically push her and brought his arms up to shield his face.
*BANG!!*

A game of hide and seek, eh? Considering that there really was nothing else to see, Lincoln decided to turn his attention to the child, who was pretty much shooting out his questions faster than a railgun. "Whooaaaaa," Lincoln started slowly, putting up both his hands to calm the child.
"Before you continue, I will have to answer some of those questions. One," he continued,"I got up here by jumping. Two, this," he gestured to the hoodie he was wearing, "is my style. Three, yes my hair is green, but it's because I ate lots of spinach." Lincoln couldn't help but fib at that one, winking at the boy. Maybe it would inspire the kid to eat his veggies..."The name's Lincoln..., oh," he suddenly exclaimed, "were you the one with the lantern that ran into the bushes?" it was Lincoln's turn to ask a lot of questions. "And where exactly is your dad?"
It was all somewhat overwhelming; kids in trees, disappearing lanterns, possible marijuana patches in an abandoned building. Lincoln was in no hurry to know, though. Being up in the trees, they were likely to be safe from land dwellers...unless there were snakes. But Lincoln won't mind snakes...so much.

She had just torn her gaze away from the trees when the girl's next shout came across the lake.
He's in the forest. Words that made ice creep into Esther's veins. Her blood ran cold and her limb froze; she started to turn, but wasn't fast enough.
Joakim swore loudly, but the person the girl had been warning them about could still be heard over him ("Well there goes all subtlety"). But before she could begin to process what was said, she was being shoved aside.
Many things happened in the next few seconds. Esther caught a very quick glimpse of the supposed new threat (a man; he seemed as bedraggled as the girl on the rocks. Why was he so calm?). Then an very quick look at the gun in his hands (oh. That's why). Two loud noises split through the area in rapid succession, and the wind was knocked out of Esther as she was shoved -- hard -- and met the ground rather ungracefully. Her hand landed awkwardly on her threadcutters, slicing open her palm; there was a dull pain where she'd met the ground and a sharp one where there was now blood.
It occurred to her that her clothes were probably covered in dirt and mud. And that they had been shot at. And that if Joakim had been hit in the process of them being shot, then this was bad --
Raising herself up the ground on wobbling arms (and trying to avoid her cut hand), she hesitated, wondering if she should help (a bad idea; there was no doubt in her mind that if the man had shot at them once, he might do it again) or if she should take the Guardian's advice and pull out a chrysanthemum.
... She didn't owe him any favors. Guardians could handle themselves; they were built for conflict. Had volunteered for it, even. This was what she told herself as she prepared to either flee or stand. If I have to run, then I'll run. He didn't -- he -- he got himself into this.

Heng tensed, taking a sharp breath.
He slowly took out his Ji, crouching slightly, grip tightening. He licked his lips, staring at the Panther as it looked at them. It had golden eyes.
The air around them felt still for a moment, everything quiet. Was it always this quiet? Well, the waterfall was still going. Why was there a panther in New York?
"Run," he said to Winona. He didn't know who'd have to make the first move. Probably the Panther. Heng kept his eyes trained on it.

LINCOLN The boy laughed at Lincoln's reply. "Ewwww, I hate spinach! But does that mean if I eat a lot of blueberries, my hair will turn blue?" He smirked at him, playing along. "I'm Abraham. Get it? Cause your Lincoln! We are Abraham Lincoln!" He laughed at his own joke before shaking his head. "No I'm just kidding. Gotcha right? My REAL name is Aaron. Ok, now we know each other so we aren't strangers anymore." He said with a smile and sat back down on the branch.
"I was running through the bushes but I wasn't carrying a lantern. Why? Are you playing a game too? Do you need a lantern? Is it a scavenger hunt?" He tilted his head at the apprentice in a quizzical look before smiling again. "And I don't know where my dad is! If I knew where he is, I wouldn't be playing hide and seek anymore. He was right in front of me when I closed my eyes though. I didn't hear him move at all." He held his hands out in front of him as if he was trying to reach out to his father in the moment he was describing. "I thought he would still be standing there when I opened my eyes but he wasn't." Aaron shrugged and his hands fell back down to his side. "It's more fun this way though!" His cheerfulness picked right back up. "So are you going to help me or what, Lincoln?"
The moment the boy finished his sentence there was a loud BANG from afar, the unmistakable sound of gunfire. It echoed into the night sky, one can hear bird cawing in response. Vaguely, it was coming from the direction where Lincoln splitted from the rest of the group.
HENG, WINONA The panther kept its golden eyes fixed on the trespasser, unblinking and steady. When the panther saw Heng take out his Ji, it started to get up and growl at the pair. It bared its teeth at them, sharp white fangs glistened in the moonlight along with blood from his evening meal. There was a change in stance, as if the big cat was ready to attack or pounce at the two apprentices if given the chance.
Then suddenly-
BANG. A clear gunshot fire echoed across the forest. It was fainter, farther away, coming from the direction of where they all split up.
JOAKIM, ESTHER BANG. Any birds nested in the trees overhead few off in fright into the night sky.
The shotgun spread pierced through Joakim’s torso, ripping through skin, tissue, and fabric. It hurt, it hurt like hell and any fast and sudden movement would only add to that pain. It wouldn’t have hit any major organs but severe bleeding would be gravely noticeable.
“Oh how brave. Oh don’t worry, I don’t want to kill you. Yet.” Cha-chik. The man with the glasses pumped his shotgun to load another round. He gave a soft, silent laugh, walked a few steps closer and aimed his shotgun at Esther.
“Uh-uh-uh. You should stay down, girl.” He said with a satisfied smile. To those that paid closer attention to the flyers that the HQ puts out, one would recognize his face. A known hunter, young one at that, killed an apprentice about 1 year ago. A doctor or something?
”Are you ‘apprentices’? ...You must be, I don’t see your thread.” He laughed louder, a rising crescendo as if he was slowly realizing the worth of the treasure in front of him. “I been waiting for you. I been waiting- You both came early than expected.” He said quietly. “So tell me, are you here for her-” He motioned his head towards the girl in the middle of the lake. “-Or me?”

Looking over at Joakim, she could see blood. She didn't know how painful the shotgun wound was, but she didn't imagine that it could be pleasant.
The shotgun clicked as the man reloaded it -- and proceeded to aim it at her.
“Uh-uh-uh. You should stay down, girl.” He smiled while he said it, and the rush of fear that had accompanied the sight of his gun was replaced by annoyance. Anger, even. The hand that had been reaching for her chrysanthemum-filled pocket was lowered to the ground.
She gazed at the man with as impassive an expression as she could manage, raising her cut hand up to signify that she wouldn’t attempt anything (yet). She’d seen his face before, she was sure of it -- somewhere in HQ, plastered on a wall. A hunter… but also a human. He’d killed someone before, that much was positive… so why was he sparing them now?
Another glance at Joakim. If you could call that being “spared”.
… Well, the man had been waiting for them. And possibly had a use for them (he’d said as much, at any rate). So long as his plan didn't involve shooting them within the next few hours. (There were a lot of unpleasant fates that were to be avoided here, but they could be ignored, for now.)
With any luck, the others had heard the gunshot blast and would come to aid them. It might be harder for him to take on more people, gun or not. Perhaps they’d even caught him off guard -- he’d also mentioned that they’d come earlier than he had expected.
He carried the cards, here. Hopefully he'd accidentally reveal a few.

BANG.
Lincoln flinched, looking around. The shot sounded quite far away, thankfully. It wouldn't do to have a gunman right here, right now, stalking them in the bushes. It sounded far off, was it from where he came from? He leaned over to the boy, as if he was going to tell a secret. "Maybe your hair would turn blue," he started with an uneasy chuckle. It made him uneasy as well that Aaron wasn't the one with the lantern. Maybe it really was a pot grower...and from what he gathered from his memories over the couple of years post-death, pot-growers were notorious for keeping their territory with firearms. It dawned on him now that he had someone to keep a close eye on...someone's son, for that matter. Lincoln sighed.
"Hey, you heard the bang, right? Maybe your dad would have heard it, too." He whispered, and tilted his head to the ground. "Who knows, he might be around there and worrying about you," he added. "I'll help you go find him, but only if you wanna come with me out of this place." Lincoln would take Aaron out of the building irregardless of his decision, but it would be so much better, and possibly quieter, if he agreed on his own will.
He remembered there were four other people, out on their own and exploring. He was fairly certain, as well, that they could take care of themselves. The gunshot reminded him of the possibility of another danger in his immediate vicinity, and it wouldn't be so bad if he was alone...Lincoln adjusted his position from lax to one of preparation as he waited on the boy.

Joakim pressed an arm over his torso as his body registered his wounds. FUCK, that hurt... The viking fought to steady his breathing, vehemently denying himself the luxury of falling to his knees. He gripped his carving knife in his free hand, snarling as he bit back the pain.
'This isn't anything new, I've had worse.' he'd mentally chant to himself. When he next lifted his gaze to the human before them, Joakim's urge to outright maul the bespectacled man was stopped only by the sharp pain that hindered every movement he made.
He'd only taken two steps forwards before he had to stop (or risk toppling over), "Back the fuck off, pikslikker...!!!" he snarled hoarsely. Despite his injuries, the viking looked determined to snap the man's neck and it didn't matter what form of disadvantage he was in.
He'd seen the man's poster in passing, but didn't seem to find it immediately important to find out who he was.
All that mattered to Joakim was that the man threatened their afterlives and he would sure as hell kill in self-defense.

LINCOLN The boy jumped at the gunshot and quickly turned his head its direction as he listened to the cawing of the birds. He looked back to Lincoln after a while, and gave a feeble smile at his comment about the blue hair. The joy in his expression was gone and he settled into an odd state of silence. His hand clenched at his chest, grabbing the fabric of his own white shirt as if he was struggling with something inside. His green eyes flickered down, avoiding Lincoln's own eyes as he talked about the bang, his dad, finding him...
"I..I-!!." Aaron started to say but then he cut himself off.
...Or rather, when Lincoln looked away briefly or in-between a blink, the boy disappeared. There Lincoln was, on top of a tree, sitting on a branch, completely alone. There was no signs the boy was ever there and no signs of where he could be, no sound of someone jumping across the branches or shimming down the truck. There was only the chirp of crickets down below, whispering songs to one of each other.
Then suddenly- not far from Lincoln, there was a rustling of leaves on the ground. Then, from the treetops, Lincoln would be able to see long stems of plants and bushes being pushed out of the way. Slowly, whoever was below started to glow until it was a clear light, running away from Lincoln, towards the entrance where he came in from.
JOAKIM, ESTHER Esther tried to recall the posters, the flyers, the letters, and information that was given about this man a year ago. Unfortunately, she couldn’t recall much. He was not just a doctor, he was a biologist...something- Leveit? He had a son and a daughter. He killed his own son. That was a hard line to forget. However, there was more information, lines and lines of text that was on the paper. But now...nothing came up when recalled.
The man took a few steps back from Joakim as he walked closer towards him. His green eyes widen in surprise but as fast as it came, it was gone. What replaced it was cold and unyielding determination to rival that of Joakim himself.
He kept his eyes on Joakim but his weapon, his shotgun, was still aimed firmly at Esther. He clicked his mouth, like a parent scolding their son. “You seem a bit tired, apprentice. Perhaps too much running around? I don’t think you will be fast enough to block another set of bullets for your friend here. So I believe it would be in your best interest to sit down. After all...I only really need one of you." He said softly. The implications were clear: Come any closer and I will shoot the girl.
((Tengu, Nikka reminded me about HP. XD The shot to the chest took off 10 HP out of Joakim’s 18 HP. He is going to bleed out 1 hp every round unless he finds a way to stop the bleeding. Once you hit 0, you will have to make a CON roll to fight unconsciousness. ))

They say 'blink once, and your life passes you by'. The phrase came to Lincoln as he turned around to see that the boy was gone. How in the blazes... He blinked again to make sure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him, but there really was no trace of Aaron, the child in a white uniform. Lincoln furrowed his brow in confusion, but was distracted by the sounds of parting underbrush, and peering over the edge of the branch, he saw a ball of light making its way towards the door.
"What the heck," he uttered, and clambered down the tree, giving chase to the orb. It looked vaguely familiar to what he saw earlier on when he first got there. A light, similar to that of a lantern. The rustling of underbrush that came after it disappeared...so it really was a sort of ghost. He yanked the door open, not caring now to close the door. The specter he was chasing passed right through it, anyway. Why couldn't Apprentices phase through walls? Lincoln admitted to himself that he had never tried that, and wondered if he should run into a wall one of these days. Not now, at least, but someday.
Aaron, who Lincoln hoped was the identity of the specter, rushed through the forest ahead of him. Lincoln followed, wondering if he was being led back to the clearing where they first started, or to his 'father'...or maybe to the place where the gunshot was. The sudden realization hit him, and he skidded to a stop in the dark woods, the orb of light he had been chasing continuing to bound ahead. He had so blindly followed the specter that he forgot to take note of the direction he was headed. He felt the weight of his little pocket knife resting against his hip in his hoodie pocket. If he were to recall what the streets taught him, one lesson sticks out the most in this situation.
Never bring a knife to a gun fight.
