"I'm talkative enough-" Heng started when a he heard a woosh in front of him. He turned to look at it and was greeted with a branch smacked in his face. He stumbled back a pace, rubbing his nose.
"Er... 'tis good to make all of your acquintance....'s'," Heng said, looking around at everyone properly. After that he stayed quiet again, listening to the conversation happening around him, taking in the night atmosphere and the smell of the autumn leaves. He heard Winona say that they were ghosts, which he suppose answers his earlier ponderings, then was smacked in the ankle by a low hanging branch.
Curses.
"I was a soldier when I was alive. It was a while ago," he said in reply to Winona's question. This time he saw a branch at arm level beforehand and gently moved it out of the way, only to have his hair get caught on a higher branch.
He made a growling noise, untangling his hair.

The path got darker the further they moved from the safety of the man-made meeting grounds. There was organization back there but the forest that the five apprentices walked into was wild save for the sliver of trail beaten out by countless footprints from centuries of visitors.
The wind rattled the tree branches like how bones rattles when clanged together. Their movement made the trees more prone to to grab on to the five late night visitors who were trespassing on their land. Case in point, Heng, whom hair and height seems to be MADE to catch on to branches, leaves, insects, innocent flying birds...
As Heng stopped, from behind them, where they just walked passed, a large something darted across the trail into the bushes. A loud cacophony of rustling leaves can be heard as the thing ran through the bushes...and then it stopped. It was too dark to make out what it was...or who it was. Then again, this time ahead of them, another shadow darted across the trail, into the bushes off in the side, too dark to make out other than it was big. The creatures form seemed familiar...maybe a dog? ...the darkness hided the details. Then silence save for the raspy whispers of the wind once again.
What do you do?

She'd meant to say something withering in response to Joakim's little joke, but then her sleeve snagged.
After a second of staring at the snag in displeasure, she managed to free it (it hadn't torn, thankfully). These woods were dark and infested with overgrown branches, and the wind wasn't helping much. It blew loose strands of hair in front of her eyes and more branches into their path. Lovely. She'd settled for shambling alongside the group, wary of losing her way and of the possible hunters lurking amongst the trees, trying to make sense of Winona's slang.
Blottos? Ossified? --
Something -- or someone -- ran across the path behind them. Obscured by shadows and blind spots but fast enough to not be properly glimpsed, they flickered by and disappeared with a rustling noise and the whoosh of perforated air. Leaves whooshed as whatever it was ran by -- and then it was gone.
Esther's skin crawled, and she reached for her scissors --
Another something raced across the path ahead, and she gripped the scissors for dear life. It might've been a dog, but who let their dog out in a place like this on a night like this?
... Then, silence. Her eyes darted to the spaces around them. Empty spaces, in all likelihood, but there was always the chance that they were surrounded by something horrible. Hunters. Creatures in the woods. She'd hardly been a superstitious person in life, but in death -- in death, she'd learned that there were things that transcended the rules that had been established in life.
And if they, the dead, were walking here, then who was to say that there wasn't something just as bizarre and worrying in play here?
But the same logic made it possible that there was a light at the end of all this, so she did her best to collect herself. Breathe in, breathe out. Calm your trembling hands.
"What was that?" she wondered aloud, in hopes that one of the others (Joakim, Lincoln, Heng, Winona -- names she would have to remember) would have an answer. A dismal hope, in all likelihood.

Joakim half-turned his body to look at the others, particularly at Winona, "I have no clue what half of the words you said meant but if it means we get to scare the shit out of people, I'm in." He raised a brow when Winona stated her name and profession, "A singer eh? That's interesting-- for fuck's sake man did you kill a forest dweller when you were alive or something? Geez everything's out to get you."
His attention was promptly turned to Heng, who was busy untangling himself(or rather his hair) from the clutches of mother nature's spooky kids thrice removed(or something like that), though he couldn't help but laugh at the Chinese man's annoyance. Striding over, the viking snapped the smaller twigs and managed to free Heng's hair from the branches, flicking a bug or two off of his head while he was at it.
"You were a soldier? Here's hoping you didn't go scouting enemy camps much, god knows how long you'd spent wrestling trees instead of gathering information." with a mischievous smirk and tugging a twig out of Heng's hair which he threw down to the ground, Joakim stepped away.
Only to frown, his eyes widening at the large figure that shot past the back of their group. It darted out of the bushes, right into the ones across of it and to Joakim's surprise, it wasn't something he could identify. He hunted game for food plenty in his days and Joakim prided himself on being able to identify any forest creature he came across, but that, coupled with Esther's question, made Joakim shake his head.
"...No fucking clue." The sounds had completely disappeared. If that creature continued to run, Joakim would have wanted to pursue it, the rustling would have given him a good enough lead, but seeing as it vanished into thin air so suddenly, Joakim's instincts immediately told him to give up on it. To not pursue it. He wasn't aware of the other shadow, so when he turned around, he walked down the path where the other shadow was.
"Let's just keep moving. Watch your backs, maybe it's just some stray dog chasing something. Or... something." he pat the pouch on his belt, noting that he still had his carving knife even if he didn't have his threadcutter and made sure he wasn't walking too far ahead as he waited for the others to follow.

He had drifted off to watching the leaves crunch and crinkle under his feet as the rest continued to talk in the background. He vaguely heard them talk about their living occupations. Lincoln didn't have much to add to that, he jumped off of buildings, after all. If it was to be an occupation, he could probably pass the "stuntman" fib. Thankfully, the ruckus of leaves assailing the Asian man distracted the lot and he stepped back onto the edge of the path, watching them with slight amusement. Both Joakim and Winona sure had a way with their language, he mused.
His heart skipped a beat as the shadow passed noisily behind them, alerting a few of the group, and it skipped another as he heard the crash and rustle of feet behind him, disappearing to his far left. Well, spooks. He supposed that it was watching them, or just tripped over and fell and is now writhing quietly in pain and cursing itself for its clumsiness. With a nervous smirk and shrug of his shoulders, he got back up onto the path and loosely followed the rest down in their progression down the path. It was no point to panic as of right now, it could have been a raccoon. "Could've been a raccoon," he repeated his thought out loud, as if reassuring himself. "Or a badger."
The night had fallen to be quite eerie, and the foliage were as keen as ever to grab onto any part of them. Lincoln tucked his arms into his hoodie pockets, feeling the handle of his pocketknife, and fell silent as he kept his ears tuned to any sounds.

Heng stilled when Joakim came to uh... assist him, saying a quick "Much appreciated," when he finished. Heng smoothed down his hair, undoing the bun then tying his hair back up into a low pony tail. There. Take that branches.
Just as he finished, something darted from the bushes, across the path and vanished again with a rustling. He didn't say anything when Esther asked, just kept looking at the spot where the shadow had darted to.
Animals typically didn't run straight through a small crowd of people, did they? He reached back for his Ji (which he did in fact bring this time because of the supposed Hunter threat).
"...Where exactly are we going?" Heng asked after a long silence (say for the crickets and occasional owl hoots).

Ah, a soldier. Winona felt safer already, especially with how polite Heng seemed. But before she could comment, the poor bird had gotten caught in the branches. She let out a chuckle at that, though it reminded her that she didn't want her hair caught in the brambles. She hurriedly tucked it into her hat.
"I have no clue what half of the words you said meant"? Oh, too much slang. "Hm? Blotto, ossified, fried, spifficated? Drunk. Context makes it obvious." She said, with an added bit of snark on the end. Before she could say anything else, she just happened to see a figure out of the corner of her eye just streak past, leaves and branches in its wake. She stared at where the thing had been, hand already on her scissors, only hearing the second one crash through the bushes at the front. Aw heck no, if that wasn't proof that she should've minded her own business than she didn't know what was. But she couldn't just back out after one little scare, no matter how much she could just hear her mama telling her to stop lookin' for trouble. But she wasn't going to become a stereotype.
She rolled her eyes at both Joakim and Lincoln's theories. "If a badger mated with a lion, maybe." She said rather bluntly, crossing her arms. Regardless, she followed the tall guys, taking care to avoid any branches if at all possible. Though their gnarled claws did manage to snag her clothes many a time.
Once Heng broke the eerie silence with his question, she realized that...she didn't quite know where the end destination was for the group. Those rumors were never very specific. "...I don't know. Are we going to the other side of the gardens? Is there something in the center?" She questioned, absentmindedly rubbing her hands together. This trip was becoming all the more harebrained.
"...I guess if we get lost, we can just use a 'mum and blow this garden."

Joakim had to laugh at Winona's snark, "Would've made a shitload more sense if you told me 'de fordømte tåber er beruset', Wisecrack McSass-nona. English isn't my first language, would've thought my accent made that obvious." He walked a few paces before adding, almost as an afterthought, "Haven't heard people speak english like you do in forever anyway. Do people even talk like you anymore?"
Responding to Winona made him forget what they all saw and felt for a moment. Lincoln's mention of a raccoon or badger made him muse out loud, "That's a damn big raccoon. Or badger." While Winona's mention of the bastard child of a lion eloping and getting busy with a badger (according to Winona) made Joakim pull a face at her. Girls were so gross sometimes.
He did consider what Heng said though. The viking shrugged, "No clue. The rumors weren't very specific with directions and I'm just going with my gut right now. If you guys wanna split up, be my guest. Just watch yourselves. And if anyone's too scared to keep going..." he shot a mischievous grin in Winona's direction, "Use the 'mum and... how do you say it...? Skedaddle?"
With a laugh, the redhead looked ready to go on ahead on his own, but he remained with the group a little longer, if only because he hadn't heard any confirmation from them yet with regards to splitting up.

"If lions existed in this park, it'd be a privilege to see a badge-lion~," Lincoln added in sing-song as Joakim said his piece of mind. He was still too alert to the sounds of the forest to give much heed to the words uttered by the others. Neither of them had an obligation to stay, neither of them had an obligation to speak. If they were ready to bolt, who could blame them? The forest looked like it could swallow anything in a bat of an eyelash, after all.
Lincoln prodded at the ground, kicking off some leaves over the side of the path into the murky shadows of the bushes. The rustling had stopped, but the wind remained. There was nothing much to the trip, apart from the blundering beast that passed by them. Lincoln still felt the presence of eyes, but perhaps it was more afraid of them. "Does destination matter when there's eternity to spend?" he shrugged, and gave them a short raised-brow expression, "Then again some of us have less time to dawdle."
The walk was too slow for him. With his other hand, he raised a two-finger salute to his brow, "Will do, command," he answered Joakim, adding, "See ya lot at HQ, I'm going to go enjoy the rest of my midnight stroll." He then turned on his heel and proceeded down the path on his own.

The viking nodded, returning the salute in Lincoln's direction, "See ya when we see ya, Lincoln." It was nice to see someone adventurous in this day and age, someone who wouldn't be opposed to walking his own path, that is. Turning back to the path he was following, Joakim started walking. If anyone followed him, he'll find out who it was later.
For now, he wondered if he should try taking a path that wasn't already on the trail... He stopped where the figure he didn't see passed by several minutes ago, feeling an odd draft in the air. Looking into the darkness past the bushes, Joakim squinted. His eyes may have been accustomed to the dark, but the area he was looking into seemed... almost ominous.
So he parted the bushes with one hand and made to walk through it, unaware of what had transpired earlier on.

"In all my years I've never encountered any mythical creature," Heng said when Winona mentioned a hypothetical lion-badger. "In my early years at Headquarters, I thought that if er.. if we existed, then perhaps dragons and qilin and huli jing existed too but.. nay, no such luck," he said with a smile.
He kept his eyes looking around, on guard in case any more ah... surprises jumped their way.
"At least it was too small to be a hunter. Unless they were a small child," Heng added. For some reason his mind briefly went to the Child, but he quickly shook that thought out of his head. That boy was too honest to be a Hunter.
"I'd... rather we stay together as a group," Heng said, awkwardly right before Lincoln left but it's alright Heng doesn't think he heard.
"So none of us know where we are to go-" Heng frowned as he followed Joakim, seeing him part the bushes. "Where are you going."

LINCOLN Soon the din of conversation from the other apprentices was behind him and the forest path got darker. Thankfully the moon was still overhead, giving some light, thought the light was briefly cut every so often by a scattering of dark clouds. The hoots and cries of birds cut through the air from time to time. The sound of rustling leaves accompanied Lincoln through out. From ahead, the rooftop that was seen before in the meeting ground got clearer. It seemed to be a glass dome with a small white spiral on top of it.
Soon, Lincoln came to a fork in the trail with a wooden sign in the middle. To the right, it said "To Arboretum". There was another sign under it that said "CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION". Yet the pathway was unobstructed. Though the trees blocked some view, one could see this leads to the building with the glass domed roof.
To the left the sign read "To Waterfalls" and lead deeper into the woods.
Where to?
JOAKIM, WINONA, HEUG, ESTHER There was a small, polite, sign next to the bush (that Joakim parted and walked into) that said "Please help protect the fragility of nature by not crushing our plants. Please stay on the paths." But it was rather dark, wasn't it? And it doesn't look like there is anyone here that would stop them. And you don't hear the bush complaining about being crushed under Joakim's giant feet. If the sign had feelings though, it would have been terribly hurt to have been ignored.
Joakim was greeted beyond the bush by the density of nature; Plants, trees, branches, shrubs. It was definitely darker this way too, the trees block a lot of the overhead light from the moon. This was a path few treaded.
But very clearly (at least from as far as you can see in this darkness) there are indentations where a something crossed. Broken twigs, pushed-out stems of plants. The ground was covered in leaves so footprints would be hard to find. If one knows what they are looking for though, perhaps more clues could be found. However, nothing is stopping you from continuing through the forest this way.
((ACTION: Roll dice (using the build-in dice in this forum) and add WIS to the roll to search the ground OR track the something. If not, continue on.))

It was doubtful that something like a badgelion could ever exist -- and even if it did, they were very unlikely to encounter one here. But what did that leave, then? Dogs, humans, birds.
The latter was also unlikely, but birds were by far some of the oddest creatures she knew to exist. They were able to make their way in and out of HQ, but beyond that knowledge she knew little about them, save for the fact that they acted almost resentful. Some of them were lurking in the woods, watching -- but there wasn't a bird big enough to go crashing across a trail like whatever-it-was had.
As Lincoln branched off from the group, Esther weighed her options. If it fragmented any more, perhaps she would go on her own as well -- Winona and Joakim were right; they all (hopefully) had chrysanthemums, which would be enough to make it back to HQ should a situation arise.
But in regards to practical proposals, she agreed with Heng. So long as they were willing to remain a group, they were probably better off as one. Safety in numbers.
"I agree," she said, in concurrence to the sentiment, but she wasn't sure if it went heard or unheard. Joakim had begun to create a new path through a bush, and the sign next to the shrub looked rather pitiful in its current state of being ignored. "What are you doing --"
-- Darkness. An eerie, dark part of the forest had been revealed. Esther opened her mouth to say something ("We should stay along the main trail"), but she hesitated and said nothing at all. No use risking creating a rift in regards to where to go, in case any of them somehow wanted to go down this way.
And something had been there before them. Even untrained eyes could see the indentations in the ground. Worrying.

When Joakim responded, Winona just had to chuckle. Any other time she’d probably feel a little bad assuming he spoke perfect English, but she didn’t owe this white boy anything. Hm, must be why he could only express his feelings using two tasteless swears. She decided against giving him the satisfaction of an offended response, and simply added, “At least I can speak without sounding like an inebriated sap, you pill.” And left it at that. Hm, this trip was becoming even less enjoyable—as if that were possible.
She smiled back at Heng, seemingly the only guy worth talking to. “I’m sure that dragons exist—or did in the past, at least. The possibility of many different cultures making up stories about the same creatures seems unlikely.” She said, deciding to lay off the slang. Before she could add another comment about legends and myths, Joakim and Lincoln started their idiotic proposals to just split up.
“Hah, you guys want to be the horror movie stereotype so bad,” She said rather bluntly, crossing her arms. Unless this was—what was that show?—Scooby Doo, splitting up was the screwiest idea these guys could think of. But, that didn’t make her standing much better, being the one black person in the group…
--But why was she already getting worried? There was really no reason to be scared, right? It wasn’t a movie. And if Lincoln and Joakim wanted to make it harder to reach their end destination, so be it.
She decided not to comment again, and just followed Esther and Heng. Though the area they landed in was…well, not ideal. Very little light, incredibly dense—except for where the brush had been pushed and crushed to the ground. Very likely to just be dogs…right? Or…hunters. She didn’t want to stay here.
But curiosity towards what had passed through this area began to gnaw at her. Just if to prove that they should leave. So, she crouched to the ground, straining her eyes to see if she could identify any tracks—which was something she wasn’t quite skilled with.
