Another early morning for Joakim, and today, it was slightly different from the usual rituals he would normally go through. He had an appointment with Inkidortes, so to speak. It was a weekly thing they did, when they have time off from reaping especially. They would meet at the gym and spar. It was all in good fun, seeing as how both of them sized up pretty well against each other in terms of battle prowess. They both would be armed with either blunt weapons that they would later sharpen while they cool down before going back to their respective dorms to wash up, or they would just pick up a wooden weapon and see which one of them would break first. The first to lose their weapon loses was the rule, and as Joakim walked into the gym, he let out a small 'huh'.
Inkidortes wasn't here yet. It was nothing new, sometimes he would be here first and sometimes the Apprentice Leader would be here first. The viking reached up to scratch the back of his head, stifling a yawn as he took a look around the gym. Well, while waiting for her, he could warm up... Pulling out a hairband out of his pocket, the redhead tied his hair back in a low ponytail before doing a bit of warm-up stretches and beating the stuffing out of one of the punching bags some.
She was late. Where the hell was Inkidortes??

"Tell him I said sorry. And please, Rhys, try not to piss him off too much."
Well, those were the last words she said to him before she had headed off on an important errand for the younger, more inexperienced Apprentices. If it had been a Reaping, he'd definitely want to be by her side, but since this was a mere coaching and training session, which Inkie insisted she could handle alone, Fran decided that he'd obliged his beloved Leader's request to be Joakim's sparring partner today. Though strength-for-strength wise, Joakim might be using him as a punching bag instead of a sparring partner, Fran wasn't one to give up a good challenge or fight. "This is going to be interesting, mufufu~" he smirked to himself as he pushed open the doors to the gym where Inkie had said Joakim would be waiting for her at.
And there he was, pulverising one of the punch bags in the gym, looking as fit and ready for a fight as ever. Fran's grin widened as he approached him, hie white sleeveless turtleneck, and loose flowing white pants giving him the semblance of a glowing pseudo angel-being of sorts. Nothing could be further from the truth though. He folded his arms elegantly as he headed to where Joakim was, stopping just beside him.
"Yo, Yoyo~" He greeted in his usual sing-song voice, smiling brightly at Joakim as he did so. "Looking for Inkie? Mufufu~"

With another powerful punch, the punching bag swung violently, the chains clanking as the bag's weight yanked on it. Joakim reached out, grabbing the punching bag to make it stop before wiping his brow and turning around to face whoever had just called him 'yoyo'. Well, to be fair, only one person ever called him by that name. His 'favorite' spectator was here, and in high spirits as he always was. The viking chose to ignore Fran for a second longer, glancing at the doorway and expecting Inkidortes to walk in shortly after. No such thing happened, and Joakim frowned.
"Yeah. Is she coming?" he asked shortly, crossing his arms over his chest, "She said she'd be here for our sparring session. Did something come up?" he tilted his head slightly at the white-clad man, the same one he found annoying but somehow was confused enough by most of the things he said to find annoying for too long. Aahhh man... he was looking forwards to sparring with the ex-gladiator again...

"Nope~~ she's not coming~~" he sang simply, happily strolling into the gym with a slight bounce in his step. "She has decided that tending to fledgling Apprentices and teaching them "The Way of The Apprentice" is far more important than brawling with you~ Hehe~" he teased, walking away from Joakim to set aside the small satchel he had brought along with him.
"While I'm hardly as exciting to spar or train with as she is, she has kindly insisted that I meet you in her stead, and be your opponent today~" He begun spinning a short wooden rod idly in his hands, his grin just as wide as ever. "And as usual, she has left no room for negotiation~ Mufufu~" Spinning the rod in his hands, he caught it deftly, pointing it a safe distance away at Joakim's face. "So...the biggest question is. Would you, Yoyo, like to take me on today?" A wide, mischievous smirk spread across his face as his crimson eyes glinted challengingly.

Joakim sighed, "Typical. Ah well, the new blood need to know how to do their jobs, anyway. Can't be helped." He grinned as Fran drew his weapon of choice, "Oh? The Great Fran would play with li'l ol' me today? Isn't that a sight."
Turning around, Joakim walked towards the nearest weapons closet, pulling out a wooden sword that he'd carved just a few days back for the occasion, giving it a few small swings with the flick of his wrist, "I hope the centuries of waving Auron around hasn't dulled your staff-wielding."
He shouldered the sword momentarily, resuming his previous position and holding his sword at the ready, his posture poised for attack, "You know the rules, don't you? På vagt, Fran!"
If he were against Inkidortes, Joakim would have lunged and attempted to take the first strike, but seeing as Fran was faster and lighter on his feet, the viking decided to play more defensively. It's been forever since they last sparred, and truth be told, he was looking forwards to this match.

Fran unabashedly chuckled at Joakim's jab at his reliance on Auron when he fought, tapping the wooden rod on his shoulder as he gazed at Joakim with intrigue. "In many ways, Auron is like a staff as well -- an extension of this body~" Fran explained cheerfully, gesturing to his lean frame with a confident grin on his face. "I do not wish to end up slicing a comrade to ribbons with her, hence, this will do for now~"
The rod he had chosen was even of similar length to Auron when she was fully extended -- after years of training and experimentation, he found himself most suited to combat at this range -- and weighted almost as much as she did. For something made of steel, Auron was surprisingly light, and easy for the leanly-built Fran to wield without much difficulty. Her weight allowed him to use momentum, rather than brute strength, to inflict damage on his opponent.
…even so, his opponent today was what he deemed an "unmovable rock". He wondered whether he'd even be able to land a hit on Joakim without breaking a bone or two.
Oh well, only one way to find out.
"Rhybudd, my friend~" he grinned, recognising the Danish Joakim used, and responding politely with his own native tongue. His back straightened, one foot in front of the other, he inhaled gently, expertly scanning Joakim's form for openings, before suddenly dashing forward in a flash.

Joakim frowned, but a smirk was tugging on the corner of his lips as Fran seemed to vanish from his sight. Always so light on his feet... His body reacted faster than his eyes did to Fran's movements, taking the viking one step backwards at an angle with his blade raised to attack. He'd successfully evaded Fran's advance, the wooden staff missing its mark as Joakim brought his weapon down.
It would have been a clean hit, but knowing just how agile the tactician was, it was hardly surprising to see him quickly lower his body as Joakim's weapon descended and roll gracefully out of harm's way. The viking chuckled as his arms braced the impact of hitting the floor with a wooden sword and simply moved to face Fran once more, weapon at the ready, "If you were just a little slower with that roll, I could have cut your toes off!" with only a momentary pause in his movements, Joakim advanced once more, his sword arm held out to perform a horizontal cut, aiming for Fran's staff. If he could break the staff with his next attack...

A smirk crossed his face as he recovered from his dodge, straightening himself and widening his stance. Dodging was going to get him nowhere, it was time to try and strike the Viking if he possibly could. As Joakim swung his arm out for a horizontal cut, Fran pulled his staff in front of him just in time, his staff absorbing most of the damage. He had sacrificed his right shoulder to take part of the hit, his grin widening at the pain from impact. That was going to bruise, Inkie was probably going to have something to say about it...but at least... The ex-war strategist had something up his sleeve...
Whirling around, he used the momentum from his swift spin to deliver a blow to the opening Joakim had created from his heavy swing, striking him with his staff. Spinning it around in his hand immediately after, as he would Auron in her closed state, he shifted his weight forward, jabbing forward with the staff towards Joakim's left shoulder...

The hit wasn't as clean as he would have liked it. Fran had managed to practically halve the damage he could have inflicted on the leaner-built man, and without too much effort. Just the strategic placement of the body, and the ability to deftly redirect the energy used to launch the attack. Swift. Smart. Joakim wouldn't expect anything less from the blue-haired 'angel'. He gritted his teeth, bracing his body when he saw Fran move again. He wouldn't be able to even pull his arm back to block the hit, so when the staff struck him, it was with enough force that it stung against his ribs, "Nice..." he growled as Fran's posture shifted. He was going to attack again. With the staff moving towards him again, Joakim barely had enough time to pull his sword arm back and intercept Fran's weapon, the wooden tools snapping against each other with a sound like a cracking whip.
There was indeed some strength he hasn't seen in a long time in Fran's arms as the tactician kept the staff in place, locked against the wooden crossguard of Joakim's sword. The viking grinned, "Someone's been training..." he murmured as he broke their swordlock. Bringing the sword down in a swift, downward slash, Fran easily side-stepped away from the wide swing, and holding the hilt with both hands, Joakim performed a half-turn, pivoting on one foot as he slashed diagonally in Fran's direction.

The half-turn and the diagonal slash from Joakim was a heavy blow, coupled with the Viking's strength and momentum from the swing, and the sheer force of the attack knocked the Apprentice Leader's staff clean out of his hands. He had braced himself for impact, expecting the larger man to proceed to hack at him barbarically, seizing the chance when he was unarmed to attack, but all he felt was a slight weight on his shoulder. Turning to inspect what had happened, he realised that his old friend had rested the wooden blade of his sparring weapon on his arm, as if to signify that if this had been a real fight, that arm would've been long gone...
A poised smirk spread its way onto Fran's as he grinned back in response to Joakim's gesture. "No matter, I would've retrieved it and had it reattached in a snap, Yoyo~" Taking the brief chance during this short lull in their battle, Fran quickly spun away, dashing swiftly to the wooden staff that had been knocked several metres away. Damn, Yoyo's strong... he thought with a smirk, as he swept the staff back in his hands in a single sweep, almost instinctively flicking it open as if he was carrying Auron, and not a plain wooden staff. "That's the advantage of being in this not-here-not-there ambiguous state of existence, is it not? Mufufu~" Not wasting another moment, he swiped a wide blow at Joakim's chest, more to regain his balance than to inflict an actual hit on the Viking, and thus wasn't surprised to see it easily parried away by Joakim's quick reflexes. Impressive, and as expected of the seasoned fighter, whose regular sparring partner was none other than the Apprentice Leader Inkidortes herself...
It happened in the blink of an eye -- the silver-haired Apprentice ducked suddenly as he turned gracefully on his heel, not unlike a dancer, swinging the staff he held in his hands at Joakim's legs instead of his upper body in a rapid swipe, hoping to catch him off-guard...

Joakim grinned, pleased with the loss of Fran's staff, and marking his momentary victory by resting his sword on Fran's shoulder. Yes, that arm would have been on the ground should they be fighting with real weapons. Then again, he could have had a large gash across his ribs if the staff was actually Fran's war fan, and that would have prevented him from fighting as efficiently as he normally would be capable of, "Heh.. Then the enemy would just have to take your arm before you can." while Fran swiftly retrieved his weapon and once again widened the distance between them, Joakim assumed a ready stance, twirling the sword in his left hand with easy flicks of his wrist and his empty right hand held out as if holding an invisible shield.
He missed using a simple sword and shield... But perhaps he should pay more attention to his skills with an axe to stay on top of his game. He'll think about that next time, "Whether you're here or there, you still die under one circumstance or the next, Fran. Best concentrate on skills that let you live longer!" Fran had closed the distance between them as he spoke. Fran's timing was impeccable. He parried the wide swing away with his wooden blade easily, expecting another high blow or a strike to his torso as he anticipated the next attack.
Joakim was caught unaware by Fran's sudden low stance though, "Fuck--!" he growled, aiming to move back, but just as he lifted his leg, Fran's staff connected with his ankle, causing the larger man to lose his balance and fall flat on his back with a heavy thud. The viking snarled, and barely even registering the pain from his fall, he rolled on his side before swiping his leg out to kick at Fran. He was met with resistance, noted by Fran's blocking of his kick with his staff and clicked his tongue as he pulled his leg away and got up on his feet.
Rolling his shoulders a little, Joakim took a breath as he flicked his wrist again. His blade felt a little... 'wrong'. Either he made it out of a weaker sample of wood than he thought, or Fran's staff has actually been striking at the weak points in his workmanship this whole time. Inspecting his weapon for a moment, he then piped up, "Hey Fran. I'm getting a little hungry, so let's wrap this up as quickly as we can. Whoever gets their weapon broken first loses the match and has to treat the winner to breakfast." he smirked at the welshman, and got back into a ready stance, suddenly holding his sword by the blade and thrusting it in the direction of Fran's torso to attack him with the pommel.

A smirk spread across the ex-war tactician's face as he sang back, "Sounds swell~" It was about time one of their weapons was going to give way - what with the strength that they had been putting into each hit. Auron would've been able to withstand these hits easily, but then again, she was no ordinary weapon. And neither was Skadi.
His old friend seemed to be skilled with a sword as well, just as his brother had been before he had poofed to the same plane as the real Human Auron was on now. It was...somewhat nostalgic to see Joakim using the sword, albeit it being a wooden one. Fran twirled the staff expertly in his hands, rapidly deflecting the heavy blow from Joakim, and at the same time managing to push himself back to allow some distance between them...so that he could launch a wide swing at Joakim's wooden sword, an instinctive flick of the wrist commencing it.
A loud crack resounded through the gym as wood bit into wood, and Fran gave a triumphant smirk, not moving his staff from the sword it had cracked so blaringly against. "You're getting slow, Yoyo~" he teased, swinging around to deliver a second blow at Joakim's sword...

The cracking of wood from Fran's attack to the inside of his arm (where the blade of his sword was) made Joakim smirk. If that had been Auron, Joakim would have potentially lost his forearm, "Heh... Didn't you know?" deftly, Joakim turned the blade in his hand so he was holding it with the blade facing the right way. As Fran spun, Joakim held his sword in the direction of the swing, another cracking of wood resounding between them as he caught Fran's staff with his crossguard, "I've always been slow."
With the staff still caught against his crossguard, Joakim swung his sword in such a way that Fran's arm would have to cross his chest, and with his arm drawn back, Joakim brought the wooden weapon down, his next attack aiming for the top of Fran's head. The smaller of the two had two choices off the bat; either step clear away from the swing, or bring his staff up to block Joakim's cleaving blow.

"Oho~" Fran chimed as he twirled himself, not unlike a waltz-spin, and pressed his back against Joakim's side, his right arm still holding firmly onto the wooden staff wedged between the Viking's body and his swinging hand. His quick dodge allowed him to move out of the way of Joakim's heavy swing, which no doubt would've left a hefty bruise on his pale skin, had it made contact.
"With strength like that, I can understand why you'd sacrifice speed for it~~ Mufufu~" the silver-haired man smirked back at his training partner, his crimson eyes flashing excitedly with a challenging glint in them. He was thoroughly pleased to see how seriously they both were taking this sparring session -- he wouldn't have it any other way. Releasing his right hand's hold of his staff for just a moment, Fran spun a half round to grab the staff with his left hand instead, snatching it a safe distance from Joakim. He then began to twirl it with the help of both hands, using its momentum to launch several swift blows at the Viking's wooden sword...

Joakim growled, managing to stop his blade from hitting the floor only to have Fran lean against his very much vulnerable side. The smaller man's footwork was swift and light, and it was no wonder that he was capable of such quick and quiet movements, "Heh, I'm not done yet...!" he pulled away from Fran as the tactician stepped away from him, and before he could even prepare an attack, Fran was already on the offense, forcing the viking to parry the swift blows of Fran's staff.
Wood cracked in rapid succession with every parry, and Joakim could feel his sword give away a little bit more than it did before. Fran knew where he was hitting. Every blow was orchestrated, calculated. Taking a breath in between parrying, Joakim broke Fran's flurry of attacks by shouldering his sword and stepping in with one arm in front of him to block the staff with his arm. With the staff resting against his arm, Joakim performed a quick back-step before gripping the hilt of his sword with both hands. With a snarl, Joakim began his own assault, aiming for a body blow. The intention wasn't to harm Fran, in fact he could avoid hitting Fran altogether. But if he continued to chase after the staff as his target, those deft hands were going to lead him on a wild goose chase till he was out of breath.
So Joakim did something he usually didn't have to do; bait his opponent to parry his attacks.
