It was a nice and clear afternoon outside of the apprentices Head Quarters, and the sun rays where shining through the stained glasses of the library, creating pleasant color schemes on the surfaces they reflected. Jonathan lifted his head to scan the vast common room. In the middle of the afternoon, the library would be empty if it wasn't from the librarian behind his desk. He didn't saw many people coming here today. People were probably busy with the usual summer boost of thread cutting jobs out there. Or perhaps they wanted to take advantage of the nice weather. Jonathan then checked his cellphone's screen, confirming the time left before his librarian shift ends and when one of his colleague will take his place here. About a dozen of minutes left. Great, he has the time to finish some paperworks he was doing.
He dipped his quill into the ink and resumed his writing. Unfortunately for him, the sudden loud clanking of the massive door again its frame surprised Jonathan a little, making him crack the tip of his quill and making a small ink blot on the paper. Letting the quill rest on the side, he quickly took a small cloth and started soak the ink up. As the echo faints in the library, Jonathan darted a dark look to the responsible of this noise. How inconciderate of them. Not loosing his cool however, he patiently waited at his desk, hoping the person in question had a darn good reason to act like this.

Harvey wasn't exactly known to be particularly punctual, though he could probably say that he had a good chance of one out of four of returning a library book on time, considering he dropped by the place slightly more frequently than others. This time was not that one out of four, sadly, and he even got a cute little note to remind him. How thoughtful! Well, it was no big deal in any case; the librarians would probably be chill about the whole thing, considering the sheer size of HQ's library and the neverending stocks of everything it offered to anyone who cared. Harvey knew he'd gotten away with late returns a handful of times; the other times, he'd had to help around the library for a few hours, which wasn't all too bad considering his job was technically to stalk dying people on a daily basis. The weather outside today seemed a good shade of sunny and energetic, though, and Harvey was hoping he could sweet talk his way out of his dues and hop right out for some outdoor HQ exploration ASAP. Couldn't be too hard, right? He could always say he'd come back and do the work later, if the librarian was particularly fussy.
The little scrap of paper stuffed in his pocket and Celine slung over his shoulder, Harvey took his sweet time appreciating the view from the hallway windows as he made his way to the library, then proceeded to confidently throw the door open with a force he instantly regretted. Whoops, had those doors always been so swing-y? Maybe they'd been oiled recently. Scanning the cozy library, Harvey almost let his breath out in relief when he saw the blatant lack of readers for the day, but kept it tucked in when he met the sharp gaze of the librarian on duty. Wow, that guy could glare.
"Oh, yeah. Hey. Good day," Harvey sputtered for a moment, then shrugged off the awkwardness of the situation, holding up the Edgar Allan Poe anthology he'd borrowed as he made his way closer to the librarian's desk. "Sorry about that. The door was harder to push open last time. Right, I'm here to return this." He slid the book on the tabletop, hoping the smile on his face would be enough compensation for the rather unflattering entrance.

"Good Afternoon" Jonathan replied, putting his ruined paperwork away to prevent ink from dripping on the tabletop. Taking the book and scanning it with the library's bar-code reader, he listened to Harvey's explanation about the door. Even brightened with a smile, that excuse would had receive a better reception if it was told to a wall. Probably because Jonathan was looking at Harvey's history while listening and wasn't too pleased with what he saw. On numerous occasions, books where handed with lateness. The response wasn't as sharp at his earlier glare, but it was equally, if not even more, glacial: "Glad to hear that you will be more careful in the future so this won't happen again." The frenchman then carefully put the book away on a trolley, ready to be placed to its righteous place, then take his attention back to the blonde apprentice at his desk. "Were you aware that this book was due exactly a week ago?"
Regardless of Harvey's response, Jonathan continued: "Unfortunately, concidering your .... " he looked back at the screen, then back at the apprentice "... history in the matter, I can't simply let you go with a warning this time. This library has rules, and by borrowing a book from it, you must abide by them. You're forbidden to borrow another book here until you completed community service, decided by the librarian on the shift you returned the book, which would means....me." He was about to dismiss the blonde boy until he decided what task he would assign him when the library door opened again, letting another librarian inside. Jonathan, a little surprised, looked at the clock of his cellphone. His shift was over already? That was quick. Greeting the other librarian with a polite nod, he packed his belongings. When he exited his desk, he paused, looking at Harvey from head to toes. After pondering from a brief instant, he added: "If you want to fulfill your obligations now and be done with them, I might need help for something. Meet me at the front doors in 10 minutes. Everything will be explained there." That said, Jonathan turned around and exited the library, quickly walking back to his room.

Yeahhh, well...this librarian was definitely the cold type, seemed like it. Though his words were cordial, his tone was on a different level completely. Harvey would be annoyed, but really, he was still in a pretty light mood from the sunshine outside, and hey, he couldn't say he didn't have it coming. Books just seemed to become invisible to him whenever he was done reading them, his attention immediately diverted to other matters. The other librarians Harvey had encountered were far more lenient, though, so he was at least a little bit surprised. Looked like his streak was over, then.
"Uh, yeah, well, I'm not so--" Harvey began to make excuses, but was interrupted by a prospect that made his nose crinkle involuntarily. "Community service"? Did that mean, like, sweeping Death HQ's bazillion halls for the rest of the year? If it did, no way in hell was he doing it. But Death's HQ had a way of being unconventional, so he wasn't about to give up on it just yet. Maybe it would be picking weeds for the rest of the year...Which also sucked, but he could deal with it for one day in good weather like this. Maybe make some fun out of it. Anyway, better get it over with so he could run off and do other stuff.
Before Harvey could ask what exactly he was meant to do, though, the librarian stood up to leave for the end of his shift. "If you want to fulfill your obligations now and be done with them, I might need help for something," said the cold man before making his way out from behind the desk. "Help for something" didn't sound like floor-sweeping (hopefully), so Harvey quickly fell in step to follow him. Harvey couldn't say he liked the authority in the guy's voice, but he wasn't being imposing or anything. This might be a good opportunity to, well, not be assigned to janitorial duties.
"Yeah? What kind of something is 'something'?" Hope it's something fun, he was about to add, but figured it'd be better to wait and see what the librarian had to offer first.
