Setting: Some city, somwhere in the afternoon because I'm terrible at this part.
It was a normal day in a busy city, cars honking, sirens blaring, and people chatting. The clouds in the sky looked darker today, but that seemed normal for this area. Sarnai-Pan hunched over the edge of the window and watched as the living carried on with their normal lives. "what a boring life. Wake up, go to work, go home, sleep, and start the whole process over.....and people tell me MY life was boring, hmph!" A tingling sensation made its way up her spine, the familiar feeling she gets on a hunt when a predator is near. She pulls up the fabric around her neck to cover her face and listens for this intruder. It's hard to hear with the noises of the city, but if she strains her ears enough, she can hear steps of someone getting closer to the windowless room she's hiding in. "..Ah...are they running this way?...a hunter then?" News of Death's unfortunate illness has brought Sarnai on high alert. Trust no one, she thinks to herself. If someone is truly running this way, and quickly, then she must leave immediately. Looking down from the window, there really is no way for her to jump down without bringing harm to herself. "What do I do then? Fight?" She turns around and waits for this being to enter and quickly attaches her threadcutter to her hand.

On many days, Lincoln would enjoy running around rooftops. Just this once, he was more rushing than enjoying the run. He had a reap order to be executed in half an hour, and given the nature of the orders, he had a lot of ground to cover and a barely visible thread to locate. Jumping off a ledge to land on another, he curses internally at his lack of thread-seeing talent. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if the thread presented itself on a silver platter.
He drop-rolls into a long empty room, bare of flooring with patches of plaster flaking off its cement walls. He fished his watch out of his pouch. Another 20 minutes. Lincoln supposed he could break into a slow walk. Energetic as he can be, it was better to not tire too early. As he saunters around the bare floor, he notices a shadow moving near the windows. Frowning slightly, he peers at it. "Hello?"
It was a small figure, if he had to make a wild guess the person was well under 18 years of age. The pose the other held was defensive, and so Lincoln hung back from approaching. "Uhhhhh...," he started, slowly holding his gloved hands up. He couldn't tell if the person was dead or alive, barely able to make out threads, and now wasn't the time to focus on finding something so fine. He did, however, spot the blade in their hand, sunlight glinting off its blade.
"I don't mean any harm...," he continued, mustering a smile at the figure. It was not necessary, but if the kid decided to attack, he could parry.

No thread, not living. His face doesn't look like any of the ones on the wanted list...doesn't he look familiar? "You are an apprentice, no?" She put her talon away and looked up and down at the man and tilted her head to one side. "You are a very bright person. You would be hard to miss at HQ." Sensing the man's uneasiness towards her made her look down at the floor and blush, "Ah...sorry if I startled you, but you did scare me first." Looking up, Sarnai relaxed her body and made herself look as unthreatening as possible...which wasn't hard to do when the other apprentice was a foot taller than her.
"When I heard someone running towards me, I panicked. There wasn't a way down from this window so I had to defend myself just in case..." Looking around the room, she asks, "What are you doing in a place like this? I hardly ever see anyone come through these buildings, living or dead...Well. I mean. People DO come through here, but it's usually unsavory people who are looking for a place to hide themselves or a body." Her eyes widened as she stammered, "T-THAT'S NOT WHY I'M HERE THOUGH! I'm just here because it's a good spot to be during the day to watch over the busy streets of the city. And there's a really good diner down below that have really good pancakes in the morning." Regaining her composure, Sarnai bowed slightly to the other apprentice. "Ah..excuse my rudeness. My name is Sarnai-Pan of Team 17. May I ask your name?"

Ah, the young lady was an Apprentice like him as well. He breathed a sigh if relief, putting a hand to his chest and lowering the other to his side as Sarnai relaxed. "It's okay," he reassured her, "I'm sorry I startled you...kinda forget about other people on runs," he continued, scratching his cheek. He chuckled lightly at her recognizing him from HQ.
"You're good with faces, huh? I'm glad I'm not a Hunter...," his voice trailed away as he momentarily thought of how bad that would be, being in a quiet and abandoned place like this...where people would, indeed, dump bodies. Tossing the idea away with a deep sigh, he acknowledged her bow with a slight bow himself. "Lincoln, Team 18," he responded with a habitual wink. Formalities done and confusion cleared, he peers at the window from where Sarnai had been watching the world go by.
"I'm here on reap order duty, just looking for them blasted threads," he explained with a light chuckle. Hard work did not mean there should be no play, so he laughs off the hardships instead. "I haven't been very successful, but they'll show up." Lincoln shrugs, returning his gaze back to the girl. "Watching streets hm...?" he continued quietly, before piping up again, curious. "So you had their pancakes?"

Sarnai leaned over the window and pointed at the tattered awning below. "That's the place with the good pancakes. They make the biggest ones I've ever seen. Almost as wide as a bears head! Not the best tasting pancakes though. But! Liquid sugar fixes that."
Her eyebrows scrunched together as she thought about what Lincoln had said. She looked over at him and raised an eyebrow. "You have trouble with the threads? You must not have been an apprentice for very long." Leaning back on to the ledge, resting her head on her folded arms. "It'll get easier over time...I can see them fairly well, but for someone who's been around as long as I have, see them is normal...I would probably be able to do more but I took a break from reap orders for a while and stayed in the mailroom to tend to the birds there. I probably would've ascended by now.." Sarnai sighed at the thought of what could've been and tilted her head to look at Lincoln.
"How long do you have until your order needs to be carried out? Your team must be waiting for you"

Lincoln joined the girl in peering over the ledge to see the aforementioned awning. "Pancakes as big as a bear's head? Wowwww!" he uttered as his expression lifted, impressed. "Liquid sugar though, makes everything better," he added with a chuckle. The streets were busy and there were light glimmers of white, as if the sky was raining but not actually raining. He squints at the shimmering beams that he came to learn to be the 'threads'.
"I think it's been...2 years? I have a friend who keeps reminding me about it, but sometimes I forget...," he pondered, propping his chin on his hand as he sets his elbow on the ledge. "One of these days, I should bring a magnifying glass. Maybe it'll help see things clearer," Lincoln reaches out with an open palm, and moves it sideways as if painting a line with the palm.
He pulls his arm back onto the ledge and sighs. "I have nineteen minutes...and I'm going alone," he answered, waving a hand dismissively, "I can handle it. Those threads always appear when I need them," he added, grinning lightly. He looks at Sarnai, raising a brow in curiosity. "What are the birds like?" he asked. It was pointless for him to keep running around in circles for the time being. Most reaps had a sequence of events leading to the death, and he was in the vicinity where the death was supposed to happen. His paired teammate had something up and trusted him to complete this reap on his own. How hard was it to locate a single red thread? Quite difficult, he answered himself internally.
Maybe he'd find a shimmering pulsing bit of red in this shiny white rain. He diverts his attention to the girl instead.

"Ah...a magnifying glass?" Sarnai let out the ugliest combination of a snort and giggle as she imagined Lincoln holding a piece of glass in the middle of a busy sidewalk, frantically looking for the red thread. "I suppose that MIGHT work, but I think it may just show you what you see now except bigger." A maginifying glass. That's a new one. "If you ever do run into trouble with the threads, you should call one of your team members for help...you could try asking the crows, but you'd have better luck swinging your threadcutter at random."
Looking out towards the top of the buildings, Sarnai strained to see if the birds were creeping about. "The birds are......interesting. Don't ever let them hear you talk badly about them or else they'll either try to steal your flower or just drop rocks on you...They probably don't bother me too much because I was the one cleaning up after them and feeding them for a few hundred years." She lightly tugs on the fabric around her face to loosen it. After a while, breathing into the darn thing makes her face hot. Eventually she needs to get something more breathable than velveteen.
"Ah...you are from this century? How are you liking the......diversity of HQ? A lot of interesting people, no? This century is probably my favority so far! There are so many games to play on....well..everything!" Sarnai couldn't help but get a little excited. Thinking about all that the new century has to offer brings so much joy to her young heart.

Lincoln laughed with her when she mentioned how odd it would be to use a magnifying glass in his situation. "You have a point there, miss. I wonder if there's a special camera to pick up threads, yet," he wondered aloud, putting a hand to his chin in thought. He peered at the ground below, where the shimmering rain concentrated into a bright, hazy clump. "Or...maybe a higher vantage point is good..," he mumbled to himself in thought. In that hazy clump, it would be easier to spot a red dot...wouldn't it? Lincoln turned to Sarnai when she mentioned the birds' temperaments.
"...sassy lot, eh?" Lincoln responded, smiling slightly. Animals were unpredictable, half of the time, but they always worked on the principle of 'be nice to me and I'll be nice to you'. "Glad that they show you hospitality after all these years...," he added, craning his neck out the window to see if there were birds around. There were the usual pigeons, if that counted. A few sparrows flying around near the isolated trees. He nods to Sarnai's question as he returned to his position behind the window ledge.
"The century of the hip and now! When tech goes so fast humans don't even know what to do with them," he grinned and shrugged. "I suppose it's just normal to me. Sure, the way they speak and how they dress kinda needs some research before approaching, but overall it's like this city," he looks at Sarnai, "the people pretty much just mix around with whomever that shares their interests. I think it's great." He chuckled, turning back to the cityscape, "It sure is fun now, isn't it? I bet a bunch of us embrace it as much as you do." After a moment of silence, he turned to her again with a curious expression. "What do you guys play, actually?"

Sarnai looked to Lincoln with her big brown eyes and smiled. "I prefer any game that requires maintenance really. Just on my phone, there are games like Farmville and Simpsons. On handheld consoles, I have games like Animal Crossing or Harvest moon. The really fun games I've seen are those dancing and fighting games in the arcades. I remember when those first came out, the arcades were crowded and people would actually get into fights to play next. Now this world has virtual games where you just put on a helmet looking thing...but I draw the line at horror games...I already live in what looks like the start of a scary movie, I don't need to play in one...." Pausing for a moment, Sarnai thought about how they could make the room more liveable. Bringing her hand to her chin and scrunching her eyebrows, she said to herself, "I wonder where we could find rugs big enough to cover those scorch marks..."
She laughed and waved her hands in front of her, "Sorry sorry, I got a bit carried away. I tend to talk a lot when it comes to things I enjoy. If I ever go on for too long, please stop me or I'll end up changing the topic a few times and forget what I was talking about in the first place." Resting against the window frame, looking at the bare room, Sarnai wondered if she could add this person to her games...she never could resist a good game buddy....who may even send her a lives if she maxes out on Candy Crush
"What kind of games do you like to play?"

"Games?" Lincoln parroted, hesitating for a moment as he thinks about what games he used to play. Despite having a smartphone himself, he wasn't keen on fooling around on it. There was more joy in movement for him. Lincoln scratches the back of his head, raising a brow in thought. "Hmmmm, I'm not exactly big on games," he started, looking at her apologetically, "I do keep in the gamer's loop accidentally, though. Sadly, those would not be the ones you like," he bowed his head. The games were likely first-person shooters, and so far he was interested in the newer console games, like Far Cry...or whatever it was called.
To be frank, he was solely more interested in graphics and sound design rather than playing it himself.
"I gotta agree with you on horror games, though!" Lincoln added, his hands moving to emphasise his manner of speech. "I particularly regret watching those simpler ones that just have lots of those pictures and loud sounds...I think they call them jumpscares?" he paused in thought for a moment, recalling what people had called them. "Yeap, I'm pretty sure they're called jumpscares. Some games use them so much it's just plain annoying...," he ended with a light chuckle, sighing as he looked over the city scape once more.
"And I don't mind you talking a bunch. It's kinda interesting to hear what goes through people's minds," he smiled at her, shrugging his shoulders. "Sometimes, more things are learnt through listening to a lot of stuff, yanno?"
